hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play coincidence off of Sabrina Carpenter's brand new short and sweet album on the guitar today I am using my journey o f422 guitar which is one of my coolest guitars because it does actually fold in half so it's great for traveling so if you are interested in this model or any of their collapsible guitars I will link them down below um here is a quick overview of everything I'll be covering in this tutorial today just a fair warning this song is going to be a little bit more on the intermediate side so just take that for what it's worth but I will walk you through step by- step how to play the song um but with that being said let's go ahead and get started all right guys so we're going to need to know eight different chord shapes to play through this song and we're going to go ahead and start with our E major which looks like this and sounds like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord charts you're seeing on screen I Do cover how to do that my free beginner course right here on YouTube so make sure check that out right here the next chord is our e suspended four so you're just going to add your pinky like this after that we have our B suspended for next is our a major then we have our a minor and then the rest of these chords are going to be bar chords Okay so we've got our B minor we have our G sharp and then the last chord is our C minor and if you're somebody who struggles with bar chords I do have a bar chord miniseries you can check out right here where I talked to you through some tips and tricks on how to make those bar chords sound better and now before we leave this little chord section I did want to address something so we have our e supended four chord which looks like this um but the way that I actually will play it throughout this song is the first time I play it I'll play it with these three fingers like this and the second time I play is I'll actually just play it with these two fingers and even though it sounds a little bit different these are both e suspended four chords they're just like different variations of it and the reason I do that is because when I do the transitions between e to esus4 the first time all you have to do is add that pinky on so it's an easy transition from E to esus4 all right from here we're going to go to our B sus for and then since this chord shape you know is just our ring and our pinky finger together what I'll do is I'll just slide that back down to the second fret and that's why I think for transitioning it's easier to play esus4 with just these two fingers the second time so basically the point is both this and this are esus 4 so I like to play both versions so I'll go from E to esus4 like this to bs4 to esus4 like this and for me that just makes my chord transitions a little bit easier as I play through this song so if you want to adopt that as well it's just a suggestion or an option for you but with that being said those are the eight chord shapes you need to know to play through this song so go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really memorize these chord shapes as well as practice transitioning back and forth between them because it'll make learning the rest of the song so much easier and in this song in particular it is really important because this song Moves super fast so you really want to make sure you can get those transitions down and if this is a skill you're currently struggling with I do have an entire practice with me playlist right here on YouTube where we go through the skill and build it up in real time together so make sure to check that out I'll link it in the corner if you need it once you have these chords memorized you can transition between them fairly easily then we can go ahead and talk about the strumming that I would suggest using for this song all right guys so as always if you are a little newer to playing guitar or you're somebody who struggles with playing guitar while singing at the same time the first thing I would suggest doing is to bring up the song and go ahead and play through the entire thing with a single down strum on each chord change as you sing through the song and you want to take this time to really get used to what word or what syllable you're singing whenever those chords are changing so here's a quick example of what that would look like and I put my head on your chest she knew she's got a real all right so you can already tell just from practicing how quickly we do need to be able to transition these chords so again make sure to pause and practice that until youve developed that muscle memory for them but essentially you would want to do this for the entire song and just really make sure you know where those chords are going to be changing and this actually something you do right now if you check out my patreon page I do have this entire guide available to download and print out so I'll make sure to leave that link in the description box for you um but once you get used to this practice pattern then we can go ahead and add to it to do more of a full strumming pattern that you can use for the whole song all right guys so the strumming I would suggest for this song it might look a little different than my other videos that's because I've actually meshed two different uh measures together into one kind of massive strumming pattern so don't worry we will break apart like each of these sections but essentially on the left half that's one measure and on the right half is the another measure and we're going to play these back and forth while we play through the song okay so with that being said these are going to both be counted in an eighth note Rhythm so on the left half we have 1 and 2 and 3 and four and 1 and 2 and 3 and four and down down up down down up down up all right and so this left half is a little more important because we will be using this um exclusively for parts of the song like the bridge and things but for the rest of the song we are going to add in this second measure as well so let's go ahead and count that out we have 1 and two and three and four and 1 and 2 and 3 and four and 1 and 2 and three and four and down up down up up down up down up up down up all right so for most of this song that really iconic like intro part that we kind of hear repeated throughout the song we do want to combine both of these measures together so the full strumming pattern for most of the song will sound like this we have 1 and 2 and three and four and 1 and 2 and 3 and four and 1 and 2 and three and four and down down up down up down up up down up all right so if this is at all confusing go ahead and pause and just practice this for a few measures on your own until you kind of get how it is connected together so now what I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead and add some dashed lines Within These strumming patterns and what this is going to represent is where we want to change chords so this is why I said this song can be a little bit more on the intermediate side if you struggle with rhythm then you definitely want to take this step by step and pause as much as you need to but essentially on the left half where the dashed line is that's where we're going to switch between our first two chords which is our e and our esus 4 okay so on the first two down strums we're going to do e then we're going to finish it out up down up on our esus 4 all right and then for the next measure we're going to our next two chords so we have our B suspended four we have that four down up down and then go back to esus 4 up up down up all right so hopefully that breakdown of how these chords are broken up makes sense so Al together we have 1 and 2 and 3 and four and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and e esus esus all right and I am taking you guys through this strumming pattern pretty slowly just so we can really understand how it all comes together but just realize that this song Moves so quickly so once you understand how it all fits together and where we're changing chords you're going to want to speed it up so the next thing I wanted to kind of show you guys I'll do is between my E chord and my e suspended four what I'll actually do is I'll take my pinky and hammer on to that g string so if you've never heard of a hammer on basically what I'm doing is I'm picking the string once but then without even touching on my right hand I'm using my pinky to to slap on kind of like hammer on to that note so you should be able to to hear this note just from your left hand only so if this is something that's new to you our pinky finger tends to be one of our weaker fingers so this might take a little bit of practice and you definitely want to develop a callus as well so it goes all right it's pretty easy to miss but I do think it sounds a lot closer to the original if you do it that way so we have hammer on and then stay on your esus 4 okay then we would switch all right so it's just a little additional thing you can do if you want to add that hammer on I think that that really dresses up the song and sounds really nice so let's go ahead and go through both of these measures with that e esus b suus esus um chord progression a few times we have Hammer switch down E sus e su e down down Hammer all right and so basically that is probably I'd say like 70% of the song is literally just those chords with this strumming pattern so again go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really get this part down eventually once you practice it enough slowly you should speed it up a little bit and so more at full full Tempo it'll sound like this all right so it goes pretty fast so definitely make sure to practice it slowly first now like I was saying this strumming pattern you can use for the entire song so let me go ahead and show you the first verse because it's going to be a little different when we get to that a chord okay so here on the first verse we have she knew she got a real Su all right so here on this next line we're on our a chord and what I would recommend doing is just playing through both of these measures on your a so down up down up down up down up up down up now her name comes up once and it comes up twice that her even be here she's back in your life all right then back to the same progression now she's in the same Dam City on the same all right and that leads us nicely into the chorus so what I wanted to show you that's a little bit different here in the chorus is we've got our B minor to our a and what I would do for these two chords is just play the left half or the left measure only so for the B minor we're going to have down down up down up to a down down up down up and then again that iconic all right so for the chords we've got B minor down down up down up to a down down up down up back to both measures and then here on what a coincidence we're going to go to our a and I would just recommend a single strum for each of these chords coincidence and then here what she does is she'll pause for a second before going back into the E Etc um chord progression so what I would do here is you kind of can mute your strings by kind of just gently having your fingers like lay over the strings so that'll mute the strings and what I would do is just go we've got down up down up so we'd be like what a coincidence pause down up down up all right so let me go ahead and play through that entire Chorus for you coming out of verse one now she's inam City and You' lost all your common sense what a coincidence all right and then you would just keep going from there and the other place in this song that I would recommend just sticking with the left half of the pattern would be in the bridge so here in the bridge we have a little bit of a different chord progression we've got our e to our G sharp to our a to a minor so for all of these chords like we did with that one line in the chorus I would just do the left half of this pattern so we've got e down down up down up to G Shar down down up down up to a down down up down up to a minor all right and basically you can hold just the left pattern for the entire Bridge so together that would sound like this water your phone just died your car drove his from the to her face all things looks nice but who's by your side damn it she kind of looks and then here we're going to do single strums again and this is where we have that C minor chord she kind of looks like slide down a fret the girl you through all right so it's a little walk down there we've got C minor B minor and then a at least that's what you said back to this all right and so then it goes back into the chorus which we've already played through and yeah that's basically how you can play the whole song the song is pretty short so even though it is a little bit more difficult as far as Rhythm and cords um once you get it under your fingers it should come together pretty quickly after that so now the last thing wanted to talk to you guys about is totally optional but I think it really can like level up your playing if you can add it in which is a palm mute so this strumming rhythm is already really quick and um has a lot going on but if you can also on top of that apply a palm mute by taking the side of your hand and just kind of gently resting it on your strings a little while you play you'll hear that instead of ringing out it'll dampen the sound of them and what I've noticed in this song is you kind of go back and forth between like a palm muted strum and then a ringing strum so whenever Sabrina is singing you kind of want to Palm mute that section so it's the same strumming Rhythm same chord same breakdown and everything we're just adding a pal mute all right and then when she's not singing then you would let it ring so for example in verse one we've got the second I put my head on your chest she knew she's got a real all right so you can see how I went back and forth between adding the pal mute for two measures and then taking it off for two measures um totally optional like I said but if you can add that into your cover I think it sounds really great and my suggestion for that would be to Pal mute whenever you're singing and then let it ring whenever you're not um but basically yeah that is the strumming Rhythm that I would recommend for this song even though it can be a little more difficult to under your belt you can apply it for the whole song so go ahead and you know make sure to practice it as much as you need and once you get it it'll be so fun to play through all right guys so again go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really get these strumming rhythms under your belt like I said the actual count of it is not too hard but the speed at which we're going at makes it a little bit more difficult as well as where we're making those cord transitions so just take as much time as you need to really develop the muscle memory you need to be able to play through this strumming pattern and then once you can do that it'll be easier to sing on top of it after but once you have the strumming under your belt then we can go ahead and put together all of these elements to play through the song One 2 one 2 3 4 second I put my head on your chest she knew she's got a real success now her name comes up once and it comes up twice that even me me she's back in your life now she's Want to
