hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play delicate by Taylor Swift on the guitar so stay tuned is this is something that you want to learn for me we can't make so this song is pretty beginner friendly because there's only six chords to play the whole song and there's no capo to play it in the original team like Taylor Swift along with that I really only have two strumming patterns that go along with this song however the strumming pattern might be a little bit difficult if you're a beginner but don't worry I will show you alternate strumming patterns that you can use that sound very similar but are easier to play but with all of that being said let's go ahead and jump into what those chords look like never been all right so like I said there's only six chords you know for the whole song we're gonna go ahead and start off with C which looks like this and sounds like this after that you need to know d-minor which looks like this and sounds like this next we have a minor which looks like this and sounds like this after that we have F which is our bar chord which looks like this and sounds like this if bar chords are hard for you I have a TMT tutorial about how to practice them but if it's something that you're having trouble with you can also play the alternate version of F which looks like this and sounds like this after that we have E minor which looks like this and sounds like this and then the last quarter you need to know is G which looks like this and sounds like this all right and those are the only court you need to know for this song alright so once you have this chords memorized go ahead and take a moment to practice transitioning between them the transitions in this song move a little bit quickly and along with that strumming pattern it can be a little bit challenging if you're a beginner so definitely pause the video and practice transitioning between the chords that way you can get used to the speed that you'll need to go out but once you have that down let's go ahead and jump into those strumming patterns look isn't it isn't it so if you're familiar with my other tutorials you'll know that the first strumming pattern I always recommend for anyone learning a new song is just to play one down strum on the beat with every chord change that way you can get familiar with where those chord transitions are going to take place and what word you'll be singing on and things like that so let's go ahead and go through an example of what that looks like I'm going to go ahead put my C chord on because that's the first chord in this song and we're just going to strum it down once then we switch to our D minor one down strum then we have a minor and then we go to s and that's the chord progression for the majority of this song so let's go ahead and go through that one more time we're going to start with our C chord and you just strum it down once followed by D minor then we have a minor then we go to a dive bar on the east side where you add phone lines up my nightstand and the black come here you can meet me in the back dark jeans and your Nikes look at you oh damn never seen that color blue just think of the fun things we could do alright and essentially what you want to do is take that pattern through the one down strum for the rest of the song just so you can familiarize yourself with the song and where all those transitions will be taking place and things like that but once you have that down let's go ahead and jump into our second strumming pattern ok so like I said earlier these next few strumming patterns I don't really use in my cover but I think that if you're a beginner it's beneficial for you to learn these before tempting the one that I will teach you last which is strumming pattern 4 so if you want to go ahead and skip to the part that is me teaching you the pattern that I'll actually be using in my cover go ahead and skip to this time however I do think that if you are new to guitar it's gonna be beneficial for you to learn these other strumming patterns first before you go to that one but this next turning pattern I have to show you is just this you can see it's down mute down mute so it's just as straightforward as it looks what we're gonna do is put our chord on so let's go ahead and start with our C chord cuz that's the first chord in the song you're just gonna stomach down once just like we just did but then instead of just going to the next chord you're going to take your hand and kind of stop the strings and kind of do that mute sound so all I'm doing is just flapping the strings right above where my sound hole meets my fretboard you're just gonna strum it down once and then meet the strings I like to do it with an open palm sometimes when I'm playing I'll do a fist whatever is more comfortable for you so let's take this through we've got C mute twice you switch to your next chord which is D minor D minor mute twice a minor my s so this will be a great pattern for you to incorporate into your cover it sounds a lot more rhythmic but it's not much harder than the first strumming pattern so let me go ahead and show you what it sounds like with our song dive bar on the east side when you have full lines of my night stand in the black coming you can meet me in the back dark jeans and your Nikes look at you who did never seen that color blue just make other fun things be good - that's it that's the whole second starting pad it's super simple but it dresses it up a lot more from the first pattern but if you have that doubt already and you think it sounds a little bit too plain we can move on to our third strumming pattern this is going to be a little more detailed than the second one so here it is as you can see it's just down mute down down down up so what we're gonna do is it's gonna start out the same as our second strumming pattern so go ahead put your C chord on we've got down mute down and then instead of repeating that we're gonna go back and do down so that's the whole pattern so let's do that again we've got down mute down down so let me go ahead and put that in rhythm for you guys so you can hear what that sounds like we've got down move down down down so one more time that's down down down so when I you guys go ahead and practice that pattern with me with your C chord on we're gonna do this in rhythm so we've got down down down down up down down down all right great and then once you have that pattern down all you want to do now is put in those transitions so let's go ahead and go through what that would sound like put your C chord on we've got down down down down up switch to your next chord which is D minor down down up next we have a minor down deep down down down and then lastly we have F and it's the same thing down down all right so let's go ahead and put that together without stopping and I will show you what that sounds like in the song there's C chord on they got down get down down down dime Far East Side where you at for lights up my nightstand in the back you oh damn never seen that color blue just think other fun things all right so that's our third strumming pattern again I'm gonna repeat myself that I am just teaching you the second and third strumming patterns to kind of lead up to this fourth pattern I'm about to show you so here it is this is the fourth pattern and this is actually the pattern that I will be using in my cover at the end but like I said earlier it's a little bit easier to learn this pattern if you learn the previous ones let's go ahead and take a look at this pattern a little more closely so as you can see it's down up mute down up down down up I know it looks pretty long but if you're familiar with this song you'll kind of get the rhythm I think it's pretty accurate to how the song actually sounds so let me go ahead and break this down for you guys a little bit more if you want to put your C chord on since that's the first chord in the song let me go ahead and show you how this sounds we've got down mute down up down down down so the whole pattern is going to be played through for one quart at a time so let's do that again with our C chord we've got down up mute down up down down all right so it may not really sound that great when it's not in rhythm so let me go ahead and show you what it sounds like in rhythm we've got down get down up down down down so let me go ahead and slow it down so you guys can play with me again I have my C chord on we've got down up mute down up down down down up down down again I know that it looks a little bit confusing because it's so long but once you get the hang of it it's really easy to play because you'll hear that the rhythm is very similar to the original song and you will play this whole pattern through for every chord change so it's not like you have to switch chords in the middle of it or anything like that so go ahead and pause the video here and practice it out whatever tempo you need until you can get it a little bit faster and then once you have the tempo up to speed we can practice putting in those chord transitions so let me go ahead and show you what that sounds like we've got C D minor down down up a minor help you down up down down down a fence minor all right and that's the pattern that I think sounds the best with this song let me go ahead and put that together with the word see you guys can hear what that sounds like I'm also going to speed it up a little bit more to match the tempo of the song dive bar on the east side where you read it for myself a nightstand in the plan come you meet me in the back Daichi many many keys look at you Oh 10 never seen Matt cover blue just make other fun things all right and that is the whole strumming pattern that is again the one I'll be using in my cover here at the end all right so once you have all of those chords memorized and you can transition between them and you have that strumming pattern down pat then we can actually go ahead and put all of those elements together and play through the whole song I will be listing up here in the corner what strumming pattern I'm using for which part of the song as well as listing all of the lyrics and chord changes and everything on screen in front of you I will try to incorporate all of the strumming patterns at some point in the song that way you guys can just hear what it would sound like during that part but feel free to use any of the strumming patterns I showed you or make up your own for whatever part of the song you want whatever you want to interpret her for your cover but I will be listing the way that I'm playing it up here so without further ado let's go ahead and play through delicate by taylor swift
