hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play God as a woman by Ariana Grande on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you want to learn all is said and done alright so today I'm going to show you guys the easiest way that I could figure out of how to play this song in the original key I've seen a lot of chords online and they require a lot of Barre chords and a lot of flats and things like that you have to play up on the fret board so it can be a little bit trickier this is the easiest way I could figure out how to play that sounds like the original there are still a few Barre chords but don't run away I do have a couple of videos on either how to practice your Barre chords or alternate fingerings for Barre chords so definitely check either of those out if that's something that you're having trouble with but besides that this song is very doable so you will need a capo on your first fret to play this in the same key as ariana grande's version and it also has six chords in the entire song the good thing about it is that these chords are very repetitive it's the same six chords in the same order for the whole song so once you get the chord progressions down the rest of the song becomes a lot easier to learn and speaking of our capo I wanted to let you guys know that today's video is sponsored by my friend Leo over at make it alright so let's go ahead and jump into those chords you need to know I think earlier I said there were six but there's actually only five so let's jump into the first one which is D minor which looks like this and sounds like this and remember those X's need not to play those strings so you'll want to make sure you're muting the top two strings after that we have a minor 7 which looks like this and sounds like this all right after that we've got B flat which is a bar chord and it looks like this and sounds like this then next we have g-minor which is another bar chord which looks like this and sounds like this and then our last chord is a7 which looks like this and sounds like this and those are the five chords you need to know for this song alright so once you have those chords memorized go ahead and take a minute to practice transitioning between them like I said at the beginning the song is pretty repetitive and the chords follow the same progression throughout the whole thing so it will really benefit you to take the time now to practice those transitions so here's the order of the chords and let me just go ahead and take you through it once so that you have a little practice going between those transitions we're gonna start with our D minor chord then we go to a minor 7 that's D minor back to a minor seven then here we have B flat and then back to a minor seven and then here we have G minor and then you go to a seven so again I really strongly suggest that you pause the video and take a second to practice these transitions because once you get them the rest of the song is going to be that much easier to learn alright so once you have those transitions down let's go ahead and jump into our strumming patterns for this song it's like I always say in all my tutorials the best way to get familiar with the song is just to go through the whole song and just start off by doing one down strum on every chord change this will really help you get more familiar with where those chord transitions are going to be taking place like what weirdo be singing and it kind of gives you more of the rhythm of the song so this isn't going to be way too different from what we just did practicing those transitions but let me go ahead and take you through an example of what this would sound like I'm going to go ahead and do the first verse for you you ain't got a one-track mind yeah anyway you like yeah and I can tell that you know I know how I wanted ain't nobody else can real a boy like that you ain't afraid baby down and let's pray and the way I like it how I want it so that's just an example you would theoretically want to go through the entire song and just do that until you can get those transitions in time with those words and you're really comfortable with it once you have that down let's go ahead and jump into our first strumming pattern so here's our first strumming pattern as you can see it's just down up mute and this is going to go by pretty fast so let me go ahead and show you an example of what this sounds like we've got down a mute that was the whole thing down and you're gonna want to do this once for every chord change so go ahead and put your D minor chord on it's because it's our first chord in that round and let's go ahead and do that together you're just going to strum down and then back up and then come back and mute your strings you can do that by just kind of slapping it with the palm of your hand you can ball your hand up and slap it that way you can really do whatever you want just to kind of stop the sound I think it sounds really cool with this song and it gives it more of a rhythmic feel so let's go ahead and do that again we've got down that's the whole strumming pattern so now what you want to do is go ahead and practice speeding it up and putting it in rhythm so we've got down a mute kind of goes by really fast so once you can do it at speed let's go ahead and put in those chord transitions so we've got D minor and then we've got a minor seven D minor a minor seven B flat back to a minor seven and then G minor and then a seven so now let's go ahead and put that in rhythm and that's the whole strumming pattern so let's go ahead and go through the verse together so you can hear what that sounds like I've got my D minor chord on to start off you know I wanted a nobody you can leave a work that you ain't afraid baby lay me down and let's pray I'm telling you the way I like it Oh I want it so you can see that's the whole strumming pattern super simple but once you have that sounds let's go ahead and jump into our second strumming pattern so here's our second strumming pattern as you can see it kind of looks like the first strumming pattern but we're going to add a little bit more to the tail end of it so the whole thing is down up mute down up down down down up I know it seems a little bit long but once you see how it goes together you'll hear the rhythm and it'll be a little easier so you can see at the beginning of our strumming pattern it's exactly the same as our first one so go ahead and put your D minor chord on what you're gonna do for this strumming pattern is we're going to stretch this strumming pattern out between two chords so what I mean by that is you're not gonna play this whole thing just for D minor or whatever quarter to play you're only gonna play the first half then for the second half of the strumming pattern we're switching to our next chord so let me go ahead and show you an example we have D minor on and we're just gonna play down mute just like the first strumming pattern then here in the middle of this pattern we're gonna go ahead and switch over to our next chord which is a minor 7 and now we can play the rest of it which is down down so I'll go ahead and put your a minor seven chord and try that second half with me we have down up down down up one more time we have down down okay so let's go ahead and put that second half in rhythm we've got down up down down down up so one more time down up down down down so let me go ahead and put both hats together to show you what that sounds like my D minor chord I have down mute switch to a minor seven down down so you can hear the rhythm is still there let me go ahead and speed it up a little right down down down so once you have that pattern down we're going to go ahead and move on with the rest of the chords because like I said they're all in the same progression so let's go ahead and start with our D minor we've got down mute switch to a minor seven down we're going to do that again D minor down mute back to a minor seven then here we're gonna go to B flat down mute back to a minor seven down up alright and then here on the last G minor and a seven chord you're just gonna want to go back to strumming pattern one so we've got to mute down I know I just threw a lot of information out at you but if you put it together it'll make a lot more sense so let me go ahead and show you the whole pattern all right so I know that this pattern will take a little bit of practice with those chord transitions but let's go ahead and go through it one more time all together go ahead and put your D minor chord on because that's what starts on and we'll go a little bit slower down down up down down down up down down down all right so if you need a little more practice definitely pause this video and whine and do whatever you need to get that under your belt but once you have that down good news that's the only strumming pattern really that you need for this song because this song is really repetitive between the verses and the choruses this is the strumming pattern that I use for all of the verses so now let me go ahead and jump into a picking pattern that I like to use with the quarter all right so I've gone ahead and zoomed in a little for this picking pattern so this picking pattern is relatively repetitive I'm go ahead and put your D minor chord on and what we're gonna do is we're going to take our thumb and play the fourth D string then you're going to want to take these three fingers your pointer middle and ring and put those on the top three strings G B and E and so now what we're going to do is pick each of these strings from bottom to top in order so we've got four three two one and once you have that down we just have to do it in rhythm so you go so you can hear these three fingers go all in succession like run after the other so practice that with me 4 3 2 1 one more time four three two one okay after that you're going to go ahead and go to our next chord which is our a minor seven for this one what you're going to do is you're going to pick these same four strings but instead of playing them one at a time we're gonna pick them all at the same time so we still have our thumb on four pointer on three middle on two and ring on first string so pick all of those together all right so now go ahead and practice going from D minor to a minor seven so notice that your fingers on your right hand are never going to be leaving these four strings that's where they're going to be anchored so for D minor we have four three two one all in succession then switch to a minor seven and pick them all at once we scoot out a little so you can see both my hands so again for D minor we've got four three two one and then a minor seven all for it once then you repeat that D minor then a minor 7 okay here's where we change chords so now you want to put your B flat chord on so here's gonna change a little I'm moving my thumb from the fourth string to the fifth string so now my thumb is on the fifth a string but the other three fingers are still on the top three and the pattern is still the same we've got five three two one again five three two one all right and then from there you go back to a minor seven and you just pick all four of those strings okay so let's put that all together we've got D minor a minor 7 D minor a minor 7 switch to b-flat but move your thumb to the fifth string now back to a minor 7 okay and you're almost there that's almost the entire picking pattern so from here we're gonna go to our G minor chord which is that bard chord what you want to do now is move your thumb to the bottom string in this chord which is going to be our lowest six or east string and then these three fingers are still on the top three so now we've got six three two one six three two one and a lot of you guys point this out in my other tutorials you're right we're not going to be playing these two strings the fifth in the fourth so those are the strings that our fingers are on so if you want to remove those fingers because it's easier to Barre that way you can take your second finger and kind of push your first finger down like this and that'll help with that bar and when you're doing this picking pattern you can actually just put your first finger across without doing the whole G minor pattern so it'll still that sound the same so if that's easier for you and then go ahead and do that when you're doing the picking pattern so anyways we have G minor 6 3 2 1 and then you switch to a 7 and then now it's 5 3 2 1 all right so just remember that D minor B flat G minor and a seven you're going to be picking those strings individually but every time you play a minor seven you're going to be picking them all at once so let's go ahead and slowly go through this entire picking pattern together I've got my D minor chord on because that's how it starts we've got four three two one and then all four at the same time again four three two one all four switch to b-flat five three two one back to a minor seven and then we've got G minor 6 3 2 1 a 7 5 3 2 1 this pattern is gonna take a little bit of practice but the good news is once you get it down again like I said it repeats itself through the whole song so you won't have to learn another picking pattern all right so now all you have to do is practice getting that a little bit faster and then before you know it you'll be able to play this picking pattern which sounds a lot like the original so let me go ahead and play it through you a few times in tempo just so you can hear what it sounds like all right so just keep practicing it until you have that under your belt and then once you have that down then we can actually take our scrubbing and our picking put it together and play through the entire song all right so once you have all those chords memorized you can transition between them you've got that strumming and that picking pattern down then we can go ahead and put all of those elements together and play through the whole song I will list right in front of you all the lyrics and chords and everything above you as well as up here I will put if I'm using a picking pattern or strumming pattern or what you'll be hearing me play in that part of the song I'm also going to go slightly slower than the original song that way we can try to all keep up and one last note is I want to apologize for my voice this is a very high song and for my range so sorry about that but let's go ahead and do
