hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play good luck babe by Chapel rone on my Orange Wood Brooklyn acoustic guitar so if you like what you see I will make sure to link more information about this guitar in the description box here is a quick overview of everything I'll be teaching you guys in this tutorial today and with that being said let's go ahead and get started all right guys so you only need to know six different chord shapes to play through this song and we're going to start with our G major which looks like this and sounds like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord charts you're seeing on screen I Do cover how to do that in my free beginner course right here on YouTube so make sure to check that out right here the next chord is our a major we also have our D major then there's our B minor next is our E minor and then the last chord is our E minor ad n and all you want to do is take your regular E minor and then have your ring finger press on the bottom E string on the second fret here all right and those are the only six chord shapes you need to know to play this song so go ahead and and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really memorize these chord shapes as well as practice transitioning back and forth between them cuz it'll make learning the rest of the song so much easier for to link that in the iard for you um but once you have those chords under your belt we can go ahead and talk about a strumming pattern that you can use for this song all right guys like I always say if you are brand new to playing guitar or you're somebody who struggles with playing guitar while singing at the same time the first thing I would suggest doing is to bring up this song and go ahead and play through the entire thing with a single down strum as you sing through the song and you want to take this time to really just get used to what word you're singing what syllable you're on whenever those chords are changing so here's a quick example of what that would look like for the beginning it's fine it's cool you can say that we are nothing but you know the truth all right so that's just a quick example but you would essentially want to do that for the entire song and just make sure you know where those chords are changing this actually something you do right now if you check out my patreon page I do have this entire guide available to download and print out so I'll make sure to leave that link in the description box for you but once you're used to this single strum and you know where those chords are going to change then we can go ahead and build on that for a more full strumming pattern all right guys so for this first strumming pattern as you can see it's pretty simple we're just sticking with all down strums and we're going to do this with an eighth note count so it's going to sound like this we have 1 and 2 and three and four and 1 and 2 and three and four and down down down down down down down down all right pretty simple just all down strums like that but something you want to do is we're going to add some accents to some of these beads so whenever I say accent all I'm doing is with my right hand I'm kind of strumming a little bit more with an emphasis on some of these beads so let me go ahead and turn some of these arrows green these are the Beats that we're going to accent so when I play those beats only I'm going to strum with a little extra emphasis and I'm going to focus on strumming all the strings for each chord when we do the non- accented beads or the regular purple arrows we're just going to kind of focus more on these top three strings and we're going to have a little bit less of a motion and that's how we're going to get these accents so let's go ahead and take a look at verse one we're starting here on the G chord when you play the full pattern with some accents it'll sound like this we have 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 all right so again with those accents notice how for the green arrows I'm strumming all the strings and I have more of a wide motion with my strumming hand versus the purple arrows I'm having a little bit less motion less emphasis and I'm just focusing on the top few strings all right so that's how you can do an accent we're going to go 1 and 2 and 3 and four 1 and 2 and 3 and four all right perfect and so basically once you add those Accents in you can apply this pattern for the entire song and what you're going to do is play this pattern one time through per song so with our G chord we have 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and to a 1 and 2 and 3 and four and D B minor all right and because the song is pretty repetitive we are going to be sticking with our G A D B minor chord progression throughout a lot of this song now one more thing that I want to show you how to do which I would suggest adding in if you can but is kind of optional is what we're going to call a palm mute so basically what I'm doing there is with my right hand my strumming hand with my pick in it I'm just taking the side of my palm here and I'm very gently laying that down on my strings right where the bridge of the guitar is if you gently lay it there when you strum you'll hear it kind of dampens the strings instead of letting them ring out so what you want to do is apply this to this strumming pattern with those Accents in so with the accents and the Palm U it would go 1 and 2 and 3 and four and all right so see how my right hand barely leaves these strings there so if you can apply a palm mute I would suggest doing it I do think that it makes this whole um strumming pattern sound more percussive just like the original song so now if we speed it up a little bit and add some of our chord transitions in there we can play through what you would play for the majority of the song so again we're starting with our G chord we have 1 and 2 and three and 4 and a b b minor remember those accents add that Palm mute if you can and this is a about the speed of the original song it's fine it's cool you can say that we are nothing but you know the truth and guess what I'm the fool with her arms out like an angel through the car Sun R all right let's go ahead and look at the precourse cuz this is going to be played the same way with the same strumming pattern we're just using different chords so we're starting with our E minor ad n you're going to play this through one time I don't want to call it then take off your ring finger to your E minor but you don't want to call it love you only want to be the one that I call baby all right so again this strumming pattern you would use or I would recommend using it for all of the verses the pre choruses the introduction of the song all of that um when we get to the chorus I think that it would actually be nice to switch to a second strumming pattern so let me go ahead and show you guys how to play strumming pattern too hey let's get back into it all right guys so for the second strumming Rhythm as you can see we're still going to be counting it in an eighth note count so it's going to go like this we have one and 2 and three and four and 1 and 2 and three and four and down down up up down down up up down up all right this is a really popular strumming pattern that you can use for lots of different pop songs so I would recommend definitely getting it under your belt we're not going to add anything to it no Palm mutes or accents we're just going to play this through one time per chord for the rest of the parts of the song like the chorus so let's go ahead and take a look at that chorus um we're going again from our G to a to d to B minor chord progression just like in the verses but with the second strumming Rhythm it'll sound like this we've got G down up up down up a down up up down up D down down up up down up B minor you can kiss aund boys in bars shoot another shot try to stop the feeling you can say it's just the way you are make a new excuse another stupid reason to love babe all right so it's going to follow like that throughout the rest of the chorus now if this second stiring pattern is a lot easier for you cuz I think it is for a lot of beginners you can go ahead and apply it for the entire song and I think it sounds great however my suggestion with guitar is always that if you can vary up the strumming a little bit it does blend itself to be a little more interesting to the listener if you are performing this for whatever reason so the last place I wanted to kind of address is the bridge cuz it's a little bit different there again just like with all of the precour we're going from our E minor ad N9 to E minor back and forth um but for the bridge I would Rec recommend using the second strumming pattern where we're just letting everything ring so it would sound like this we've got E minor at n e minor down up up down up back and forth when you wake up next to him in the middle of the night with your head in your hands you're nothing more than his wife and when you think about me all of those years ago you're standing face to face with I told you so all right so any place that you can kind of go back and forth between these two strumming rhythms I would definitely recommend doing that cuz it makes the song a lot more fun to play and to listen to but those are the strumming rhythms that I would recommend using for the song all right guys so again go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really get these strumming rhythms under your belt these are two of the most common strumming rhythms that you can apply to so many different pop songs so I would definitely recommend taking the time to get them going again with that all down sh one if you can add your accents and your palm mutes I would definitely recommend doing it it does sound a lot more like the original song If you do that um but once you have all of your strumming and your cords and your progressions and everything under your belt then we can go ahead and put together everything we've learned in this video to play through the song one two ready go
