hi my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play I hate you I love you by Nash and Olivia O'Brien on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something you want to learn so to play this song in the same key as the original you do want to put your Capo on the second fret if you don't have a capo you can play the song without one it'll just be a whole step lower so you'll have to sing a little bit lower if you want to do a cover it's also in standard tuning and you only need to know four chords to play the whole song so let's go ahead and jump into what the chords are all right so like I said there's only four chords you need to know to play this song Let's go through them we've got E minor which looks like this and sounds like this then we've got D which looks like this and sounds like this after that we've got B minor which is a bar chord it looks like this and it sounds like this and if this bar chord is too hard for you to play you can take your first finger and instead of barring across all six strings just just move that first finger to your top E string on the second fret like this and then you can just play the top four strings and then you have an alternate version of B minor okay and our last chord we need to know is C which looks like this and sounds like this all right and those are are all the chords you need to know okay so after you have those chords memorized just practice transitioning between them from E minor to D to B minor to C cuz that is the chord progression that follows for the whole song So once you get that chord progression down let's go ahead and jump into some strumming patterns that you can use with this song still got s in my sweaters from nights we don't remember do all right so let's go ahead and tackle some of those strumming patterns the first one is the simplest all you want to do is do one downstroke on the beat for each chord so we've got E minor D B minor and c 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 ha you I love you I hate that I love you don't want to but I can't put nobody else above you I hate you I love you I hate that I want you you want her you need her and I'll never be her all right simple enough if you want to dress it up a little bit let's go ahead and learn the second strimming pattern so our second strimming pattern is down down down up and it'll sound like this down down down down up down down up so with chords it'll be like this we've got E minor D B minor C down down down up down down down up down down down up I hate you I love you I hate that I love you don't want to but I can't put nobody else above you I hate you I love you I hate that I want you you want her you need her and I never be her all right if you feel like dressing it up even more we've got our third strumming pattern down up up down up up down down up and it'll sound like this all right so that's down up up down down up down up up down up up down down up and then if you put in your chords it'll sound like this E minor D B minor C down up up down up up down down up down up up down down up so if you speed it up you can play it with the song I hate you I love you I hate that I love you don't want to I can't put nobody else above you I hate you I love you I hate man I want you you want her you need her and I'll never be her now the whole song can be played with just those strumming patterns that's actually it sounds more accurate to the original song but I did come up with a picking pattern for those of you who want to venture out and do a little bit of picking it's super simple so go ahead and stay tuned if you want to learn a picking pattern that you can use with this song so I know there's not really any picking in the song itself but I do think that this picking pattern makes the song sound really beautiful so I'm going to go ahead and show it to you I'm going to put my E minor chord on cuz that's the first chord and what I'm going to do is with my thumb I'm going to pick the bottom E string and then with these three fingers I'm going to pick the top three strings all right if you've seen any of my other tutorials you should be familiar with this picking pattern but we're going to leave these three fingers on the top three strings and then what's going to change is the string we play with our thumb so for E minor we're going to play six 3 2 1 and then once you play it down this way we're going to go back up the guitar so we've got 6 3 2 1 2 3 4 and I'm playing that four with my thumb also so we've got 6 3 2 1 2 3 4 and that pattern is going to be the same for all the rest of the chords so our next chord is our D chord and so now what I'm doing is I'm going to keep these three fingers on the top three strings but my thumb's going to play those D string or the fourth string so for D we have 4 3 2 1 2 3 4 one more time for D we've got 4 3 2 1 2 3 4 after that we're moving on to B minor and for this one the bottom note is going to be the fifth string so we're going to play our fifth string with our thumb and then the three strings will still be on the top so we've got 5 3 2 1 2 3 4 One More Time 5 3 2 1 2 3 4 and then our last chord is our c chord that's what we're ending on C is just like B minor we're going to be playing it with our thumb the fifth string and then the top three strings will stay the same so we've got five 3 2 1 2 3 4 One More Time 5 3 2 1 2 3 4 so if you string all of those together we can play the entire phrase we've got E minor D B minor C all right so there's a picking pattern if you want to add that into your cover all right so once you have those strumming patterns and that picking pattern down if you want to use it we'll go ahead and play through the whole song and I'll list above me and in front of me all of the lyrics and the chord changes and what strumming pattern or picking pattern I'm using if you want to follow my cover version so um let's go ahead and play through I hate you I love you by Nash and Olivia O'Brien good luck I do right do me wrong so every lonely night I sing this song Feeling us but I'm still missing you and I can't see the end of this just want to feel your kiss against my my lips and now all this time is passing by but I still can't seem to tell you why it hurts me every time I see you realize how much I need you I hate you I love you I hate that I love you don't I can't eat I miss you in my front seat still got sand in my sweaters from nights we don't remember do you miss me like I miss you messed around and got attached to you friends can break your heart too and I'm always tired but never of you if I pulled a you one you you wouldn't like that I put this real out but you wouldn't fite that I type a text but then I never mind that I get these feelings but you never mind that oh oh keep it on the low you're still in love with me but your friends don't know if you wanted me you would just say so and if I were you I would never let me go I don't mean no harm I just miss you on my arm Wedding Bells were just alarms caution tape around my heart you ever wonder what we could have been you said you wouldn't and you did lie to me lie with me get your F now while my drinks and my feelings are all mixed always missing people that I shouldn't be missing sometimes you got to burn some bridges just to create some distance I know that I control my thoughts and I should stop reminiscing but I learned from my dad that it's good to have feelings when love and Trust are gone I guess this is moving on everyone I do right does me wrong so every lonely night I sing the song I hate you I love you I hate that I love you don't want to I can't put nobody else above you I hate you I love you I hate that I want you want her you need her and I'll
