hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play Kill Bill by sza on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you'd like to learn and really quick before sure to check out the link in the description box down below alright guys so I'm going to classify this as super beginner friendly but first of all let's talk about our guitar you will need it to be in standard tuning and go ahead and put your Capo on the first fret if you want to play it in the original key on top of that I only have four chord shapes to show you today and they're all super beginner friendly no bar chords as well as two strumming patterns one a little bit easier and one that's a little bit harder and one optional picking pattern you can add in there as well so with all of that being said let's go ahead and jump into the tutorial and we'll start with the chords alright guys so like I said there's only four chord shapes to play through the whole song and we're going to start with our a minor which looks like this and sound like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord charts that you're seeing on screen I Do cover how to do that in my beginner series episode three so I'll make sure to link that video right here for those of you who need it the next chord is our D major chord and then the last one is our E major chord and those are the only four chord shapes to play through this song Alright guys like I always say if you are brand new to guitar make sure to pause the video right now and just take a few minutes to memorize these new chord shapes as well as practice transitioning back and forth between them it'll make learning the rest of the song so much easier but once you've done that we can go ahead and talk about the strumming pattern so if you are brand new to learning guitar I would recommend starting with a practice pattern which as you can see is just a single down strum for every chord change and this is just really going to get you used to how the song goes together with the singing so I would recommend playing through the whole song with a single down strum and sing through it and take a note of which word you're singing whenever you're changing those chords so let me just give you a quick example so let's go ahead and pull up the chorus since that's one of the most recognized parts of this song and basically what you want to do is just sing through it and every time you see one of these chords changes on top of the words you just want to strum down once while you're singing I might kill my eggs not the best idea his new girlfriend's text how'd I get here all right and so basically you want to go through the whole song just like that sing through it do a single down strum for every chord change again this is really going to be great for those of you who are brand new to guitar but once you have that and you know where those chords are going to be changing then we can go ahead and talk about strumming pattern one alright guys so the first strumming pattern is not that much harder than the practice pattern as you can see it's just three down strums and the key to playing this is going to be making sure you get the Rhythm right so in our eighth note Rhythm it's gonna go one and two and three and four and and you just want to do these down strums on the one the end of the two and the four so it's going to go one two three four one and two and three and four and down down down down down all right so it is very rhythmic but if you kind of get it on that like kind of offbeat Rhythm it's gonna sound really close to parts of the song so again we're going to pull up the chorus so basically you just want to play this through now with three down strums instead of one so on your a minor you would go down down to D to G to E one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and all right just like that is alone all right so basically the place that I would suggest using this really simple triple down strum pattern would be in the second verse if you listen to the song it kind of like has this Beady kind of feeling right there so I think that this really mimics that really well so let me go ahead and pull up verse two and just show you a little bit of how this would sound together all right it's a little bit difficult to sing the song and do that triple down strum pattern unless you practice it quite a bit but I promise if you practice it a little bit it'll be a lot easier but basically I think this triple down strum pattern will be useful whenever the song kind of has that more beat kind of heavy drop kind of sound um for the rest of it I would suggest using the second stirring pattern so let's go ahead and take a look at strumming pattern two all right so strumming pattern two as you can see is down up up down up up down down up and the whole thing is going to sound like this all right guys so for this one we are jumping into a slightly more difficult 16th note strumming pattern so let's just go over the Rhythm really quick one uh e and e a four and a one uh e and e a four and a down up up down up up down up down up up down up up down down up so just make sure to practice that a little bit on your own and kind of hear how the rhythm is coming together how we're holding out some of those down strums a little longer down up up down down up all right it will take a little bit of practice to get that Rhythm down but just do it over and over again on just one chord and it'll come more naturally but basically what you want to do is put this strumming pattern one time through for every chord change so if you start on your a minor chord you'd go down up up down up up down down up then you have your D chord down up up down up up down down up then you go to your G chord down up up down down up to your E chord down up up down up up down down up all right so once you get that Rhythm down all you have to do is speed it up ever so slightly to make sure that you can get it at the original tempo of the original song um so once you speed it up a little bit more it'll sound more like this all right so a little bit faster if you practice it slowly at first and then practice speeding it up it'll be a lot easier for you to make that transition with that Rhythm and everything like that but let's go ahead and now see how this goes together with the song so let's go ahead and bring up the first verse and again like I said you're just going to play through this pattern one time through for each chord so starting on our a minor all right and let's go ahead and just go straight into the pre-chorus because you would use this for this as well I'm so mature I'm so mature all right and then again you could bring this into the chorus as well no one should have died get here all right and then for verse two like I said I go into the first trimming pattern where it's a little bit more Bassy and stuff like that but it's really up to you whichever strumming pattern you prefer they both can be used to play through the entire song but there is one last thing I wanted to show you guys totally optional but it's a really cool little picking pattern that sounds pretty close to like the intro of the song you can also use it in the last pre-chorus and things like that so let's go ahead and zoom in and I can show you the second page all right guys so this baking powder is going to be super simple basically all you want to do for this let's go ahead and just go through each cord on your a minor chord what you want to do is put your thumb on the lowest string which is that fifth a string and then on your top three strings you want to put your pointer middle and ring finger and they're just going to live on these top three strings okay and you just want to go down the guitar so you have five three two one and that's it then you'd go to your next chord which is D your thumb is going to move to the new lowest base note which is that open D string but same thing four three two one then G is going to be six on your thumb three two one and then e is also going to be six three two one all right so like I said I think this sounds really good for that intro um where it's before she starts singing all right and then after the intro I'd go into the strumming pattern all right and so then you would go into the rest of the song The Other Place I would use this picking pattern is in the last pre-chorus after verse two she's like now you're laying face down got me singing over a beat and then she goes back to that pre-chorus I'm so mature I'm so mature I got me a therapist to tell me there's no other man I don't wanna I just want you if I and have you no one will all right so I think it sounds really good there kind of matches the song if you want to add that picking pattern into the last pre-chorus as well but again this whole thing is totally optional I just think it sounds really cool if you try to
