hey it's Ellen here and today let's learn how to play Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer on the guitar here's a quick overview of everything I'll be teaching in this tutorial today and with that being said let's go ahead and get started all right guys so we have eight chord shapes to play through this song and we're gonna go ahead and start with our D major which looks like this and sounds like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord charts you're seeing on screen definitely check out my free beginner course right here the next chord you need to know is our D major seven after that is our D7 the next chord you need to know is our G major after that we have E minor then we have our a major chord next is our B minor chord and then the last chord you need to know is our a suspended four chord and those are the a chord shapes to play through this song all right guys so go ahead and take some time to pause the video and practice memorizing these chord shapes as well as transitioning back and forth between them because it will make learning the rest of the song so much easier and if you're somebody who's struggling with those chord transitions right now I would recommend checking out my practice with me Series where we build the skill together but with that being said let's go ahead and talk about that strumming all right as always the first thing I would recommend doing is singing through the entire song and playing each of these chord changes with a single down strum on your guitar and just get used to what words you're singing and things like that and how the guitar and the singing come together so here's a quick example of what that would look like kiss me out of the bearded barley nightly beside the Green Green Grass all right so you basically want to do that for the entire song and take a mental note of what word you're singing whenever you're switching those chords and it'll make learning these other strumming patterns a lot easier so this is actually something you can do right now if you're interested in printing out a printable guide with everything that I'm teaching in this tutorial today you can definitely check that out on my patreon page and I'll make sure to link that down below alright guys so I do only have one strumming pattern to show you today because it can be applied for the entire song as you can see we have down down up up down down down up so let's go ahead and zoom in and talk about the Rhythm alright guys so this is going to be counted in a 16th note Rhythm so if you don't know what that means or how to count that definitely check out my free beginner course because we do go over that in more detail but basically the rhythm is going to sound like this all right or with just the strummed rhythms it would sound like this one and two uh e and four and uh but you have to realize this song actually goes quite quickly so you'd have to be able to play this strumming pattern a little faster than we're doing it so if you're already struggling with the Rhythm at all make sure to pause the video and practice those motions on your own for a little bit until you get more used to it but then after that we can speed it up to full Tempo so at full Tempo it sounds more like this pattern one time for every chord all the way through and this is going to be true for the intro and all the verses all right so as I was saying you can play through this entire strumming pattern one time through for every chord in the verses but when you get to the choruses we are going to do something a little different so I'm going to go ahead and put a vertical line here after the first three down strums and what this is going to represent is where we need to switch chords so again this applies to the choruses because we're going to be playing a few more chord shapes here and it's going to feel a little faster but nothing is changing about the strumming pattern the only thing we're doing is switching chords inside the strumming pattern so for example your first three down strums on the left half of that vertical line you would do your first chord so in the chorus that would be your E minor down then you want to finish out the rest of the strumming pattern on your next chord which is a up up down down all right same thing with the next two chords D and then D Minor to finish it out up up down down all right so you can hear the Rhythm of the strumming is exactly the same as earlier all we're doing is splitting those chords within that strumming pattern so if this is you know this is something that can definitely take a little bit of getting used to as well so again pause the video if you need to practice that chord switch in the middle of the strumming pattern but all together it'll sound like this E minor okay all right so again when you do the split Rhythm that's gonna apply to the chorus but if you're playing this strumming Rhythm for the verses you can just do the whole strumming pattern one time through for each chord there is something that is kind of optional that you could do which is kind of a little bit of a more picking like tab like section so I wanted to show you guys that just in case you want to kind of dress up your little cover here so let's go ahead and talk a little bit about the picking and guys before we jump into the picking I just wanted to really quickly kind of sponsor myself in this video um this trimming pattern that we're learning can be quite difficult because it is that 16th note pattern so if you're struggling with rhythm or chords or transitioning or anything like that something that you can do if you become a patron is that you can send me videos of you playing through or practicing through whatever ever you're practicing asking me any questions and sending that and submitting that to me and then I will take notes on whatever you're playing and I will send you a video response back kind of giving you some recommend doing a little bit of a picking pattern or a tab and that's kind of in the middle of the song where there's a little bit of an instrumental break so in the chorus on that Silver Moon sparkling line we have Silver Moon sparkling and so on that G chord something that I like to do is I like to only do half of the strumming pattern down down down and then I'll come in with a down up so I'll go down down up and then instead of finishing out that strumming pattern I like to do a quick little like picking tab here all I do is pick that high E string and your pinky should be there so you're covering that third fret then you go next door to that b string because again your ring finger's there okay then you take your ring finger off and then pick it open all right so you have high e b string take off your ring finger open B string so all together it sounds like this and you can hear how that kind of lends itself into the end of the chorus if you're familiar with the song so um Silver Moon sparkly then you go into the next chords a suspended so kiss me okay and then you would go back into the strumming so if I were to put this in context to the end of the chorus where I would suggest using this little picking pattern with that walk down it would sound like this yeah so kiss me all right so every time you come across the chorus I would suggest doing that little frill on the G chord you know if that's something that you think sounds good and enjoy playing the other part that I would do kind of a little bit of a picking or a tab would be at the end of the second time that you play the chorus so kiss me on those D and D major 7 and D7 chords instead of doing the full strumming pattern you might want to try something where you like strum down and then do an arpeggio all right so all I'm doing there is I'm holding my D chord shape on my left hand strumming down and then coming back and picking each string individually starting with the G string you would go g b and I pick that like on a down pick and then I come back up on an up pick and go high e d g all right so you'd go and then that pattern could be applied for all the other D chords as well so we have D major seven you strum down arpeggio D7 same thing strum down arpeggio back to D major seven because right there the song does kind of slow down a little I do think that this kind of tab sounds really good leading in to that instrumental break so basically if I were to put that into the end of the course it would sound something like this Silver Moon Spartan kiss me then you would go into that instrumental break then go back to strumming all right and so basically those are the only two places I think that you you know could use a little bit of a picking tab portion to kind of slow down the song make it sound a little bit romantic in those sections of course again all of this is totally optional that's just something that I like to do when I do my play through so again go ahead and just take a few minutes to pause the screen and practice these little picking tabs if you would like to add that into your cover but once you come back we can go ahead and play through the song
