hey everyone it's Ellen here and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play Landslide by Fleetwood Mac on the guitar today I Am featuring my zeger zad adce guitar so if you like what you see I be covering in this tutorial today and with that being said let's go ahead and get started all right guys so to play this song you are going to need to know seven different chord shapes and we're going to start with our C major which looks like this and sounds like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord charts you're seeing on screen I Do cover how to do that my free beginner Series right here on YouTube so make sure check that out right here the next chord shape is our G over B we also have our a minor 7 then there's our G major we also have our D over F sharp there's our E minor and the last chord shape is our a minor and those are the only seven chords you need to know to play through this song all right guys so go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really memorize these chord shapes as well as practice transitioning back and forth between them because it'll make learning the rest of the song so much easier and I know I say this in every video but especially for this song with that finger picking pattern if that's something that you want to learn you want to really make sure you can get your chord transitions down I'll make sure to link that in the corner for those of you who are interested but once you have these chords under your belt then we can go ahead and talk about the strumming that I would recommend for this song all right guys so as I always say if you are brand new to playing guitar or you're somebody who struggles with playing guitar while singing at the same time the first thing I would suggest doing is to bring up the song and go ahead and play through the entire thing with a single down strum on each chord change as you sing through the song and just want to take this time to really get used to what word you're singing what syllable you're on things like that whenever those chords are changing so here's a quick example of what that would look like I've been afraid of changing cuz I build my life around you all right so that's just a really quick example but you would essentially want to do that for the entire song and just really make sure you know where those chords are changing um and this actually something you do right now if you check out my patreon page I do have this entire guide available to download and print out so I'll make sure to leave that link in the description box for you but once you have this down and you're comfortable with where those cords are going to be changing then we can go ahead and add to this down strum to make more of a full strumming pattern that you can use for this song all right guys so I know this song is pretty famous for its picking pattern but if you are somebody who would prefer to strum your guitar here's an option for you as you can see at the top of the screen we're going to be in a 16th note count and it's going to sound like this we have one E and A 2 E and A 3E and a four E and A one E and A 2 E and A 3 e and a four E and A down down down down up down down down up one and 2 and a three e and four and a all right this is just my suggestion if you want a strum I do think it sounds pretty close to you know the Rhythm that you hear with the picking um but basically before we move on I'm going to add a vertical line here right in the middle and what this represents is where we want to change chords because throughout this song we are going to be splitting the measure so we're going to share two chords per measure so for example let's go ahead and take a look at that first verse we're going from our C to our G over B to our a minor 7 back to our G over B and what you would do is split this pattern so for example on our c chord we'd play the first half down down down up then do your G over B finish it out down up down down down up same thing with the next two chords A minor 7 gets the first half down down down down up finish it out with G over B down up down down up all right so all the way through without stopping sounds like this we've got c g over B A Minor 7 G over B to my I take it down climbed Mountain then I turned around and I saw my reflection in the snow covered to the wind down all right so that's how you would apply a strumming pattern to the this song it would also work for the choruses so our chorus would sound more like this been afraid of changeing hold cuz I build my life time children get older I I'm getting older all right so like I said if you wanted to play this song with strumming there's an option for you for the Rhythm I do think it can apply for the entire thing it sounds pretty good and accurate to me um but like I said I actually prefer to finger pick this song so if you want to try to finger pick it let's go ahead and go over that next all right guys so again go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really practice the strumming Rhythm and get the cord changes and everything under your belt the strumming Rhythm here is just a suggestion so if you naturally feel yourself playing something different that you can you know kind of pick up on better then definitely go with that this is just something that I thought sounded pretty accurate to the song and kind of flows with the song pretty well but like I said most people know this song for it's picking on the guitar so let's go ahead and talk about picking all right guys so I know the picking for this song can sound a little intimidating if you are new to playing guitar but I promise it's just a fingerpicking pattern that once you get used to on your right hand or your picking hand it the rest of it kind of flows together really easily so let's go ahead and break down a couple things before we start um the first thing is that I do like to number my strings here with our low E being 6 5432 one all the way to my high E string being one so I am going to be referring to these strings as numbers throughout this portion of the tutorial and then the other two things to mention is that our left hand is just going to be holding these same same chord shapes that we've been playing throughout this um song okay so left hand same as always but the right hand what we're going to do now is we're going to drop our guitar pick and just use our fingers to finger pick the strings so for your right hand what I want you to do is take your pointer and middle finger and put those on the third g string and the second B string and these fingers are going to live on these strings for the entirety of this picking pattern okay and then your other finger that's going to be important is your thumb your thumb's going to cover the root note or the kind of bass note in all of these chords that we're going to be playing so it's going to either be on the sixth or the fifth or the fourth string okay so your thumb's going to be responsible for covering these three strings whereas your pointer and middle are going to live here on three and two okay so um with all of that being said we can go ahead and start breaking down this picking pattern go ahead and put your c chord on your left hand and what we're going to do is you're going to use your thumb to pick the root note your fifth string that's our C okay um so what you're going to do is pick your thumb and then your pointer then your thumb's going to go up a string to D or four okay and then your middle finger plays thumb pointer thumb middle 5 3 4 2 okay that's the first little half there so you want to think of it kind of as like an alternating pattern and once you have the first half then you want to finish it out we're just going to pick 3 4 3 okay so pointer thumb pointer so the hardest part about this pattern is going to be probably moving your thumb around from the fifth to the fourth string so we have 5 3 4 2 hold 3 4 30 thumb pointer thumb middle hold pointer thumb pointer all right and so now what you want to do is apply this same pattern for the rest of the chords so again if you're having trouble already keeping up pause the video and practice just your c chord over and over again till you kind of get used to it and now what I'm going to do is show you how we're going to finger pick the rest of the chords so on our G over B chord it's exactly the same we have 5 3 4 2 3 4 3 all right notice how my right hand is not doing anything different the only thing is we're moving from our C shape to our G over B all right same thing with our a minor 7 exactly the same on your right hand all right so for those three chords your right hand is picking the exact same thing and these are the three chords we're going to use throughout the verses so we're going from C to G over B to a minor 7 back to G over B all right really make sure you understand your right hand is not playing anything different for any of these chords only your left hand is changing chord shapes so a little bit closer to full Tempo would sound like this all right so like I said earlier in the video you really want to make sure your left hand cord shapes can make those transitions pretty quickly then you can put all your concentration on your right hand and making sure the right fingers are picking the right strings at the right time like I said pause the video practice this as much as you need once you get used to the pattern of your right hand it can apply for the rest of the chords it'll feel so much easier so now that we did the first three chords that we use for most of the verses let's go ahead and finish out the rest of the chords for the chuses as well so starting on our G chord the only difference for this entire pattern is your thumb is going to cover the root note remember so on the G chord it's going to be our low E string the sixth string but other than that the rest of the pattern is the same so we have 6 3 4 2 3 4 3 all right your thumb is still covering the six and the four thumb pointer thumb middle pointer thumb pointer it should feel pretty similar to the other chord shapes so we've got G same exact thing for D over F Shar same exact pattern for E minor all right so the chorus is going to utilize all of the different chords so let's go ahead and play through the entire chorus with our picking pattern we've got g d over F sharp E minor twice for this next round we're moving our thumb to fifth string okay c g over B A Minor 7 then your thumb goes back to that low E string for the D over FP uh you do want to speed it up just a little to make it sound more close to the original song So at full Tempo with some singing would sound like this I've been afraid of changing cuz I build my life around you time makes you bolder even children get older I'm getting older too all right so what I just did took lots of practice you want to just really make sure your right hand is coordinated and you know doing what you want it to do and the only way to get that down is by building up that muscle memory so again pause the video as long as you need to to really get this picking pattern down the good news is once you get the picking pattern down you can use this pattern to play through the entire song and it sounds really great all right guys so again for one last time go ahead and pause the video I'll have everything on screen for you to kind of practice the picking pattern um once you get that pattern under your right hand I promise promise promise the rest of the song will come together but this is probably going to be the more difficult part especially if you're a beginner or new to fingerpicking once you have this under your belt and you can kind of get it a little bit more up to speed then we can put together everything we've learned in this tutorial the chords transition struming picking whatever
