Video transcript
hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play Mistletoe by Justin Bieber on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you want to learn it's the most beautiful time of the year all right so for today's video we're actually going to change things up just a little bit I'm actually collaborating with my YouTube friend Jesse Lane so go ahead and check out his channel he does a lot of guitar tutorials on his channel as well as other fun stuff so definitely go check him out if you would like to all right this song is going to be super great if you're a beginner because there's only four chords in the whole song they are really easy to play as long as you have your Capo on the second fret to put this in the key of A which is the same key that Justin Bieber sings his song in if you don't have a capo you can actually go check out Jesse's video right here he teaches you the chords that you can use without a capo but if you are a cap lover like myself then go ahead and stay tune and I will show you some different chords you can use with your Capo on the second fret all right so let's go ahead and learn the chords you need to know for this song again if you are coming over from Jesse's video he showed you these chords we've got a E F minor and D so go ahead and check out his video if those are the chords you want to learn without a capo but for my video I'm actually going to use my Capo on the second fret and I'm going to teach you guys some different chords you can use to play this song which are G which looks like this and sounds like this then we've got D suspended four which looks like this and sounds like this after that we've got E minor 7 which looks like this and sounds like this and then our last chord is C add n which looks like this and sounds like this all right and the reason I like to use these chords is because you'll notice that your ring finger and your pinky never move between the chords which makes it just a little bit easier to transition especially if you're a beginner we've got g d sus E minor 7 C at9 so if you find it easier to use these chords with just moving these two fingers go ahead and follow this again if you don't have a capo or you want a different variation go ahead and check out Jesse's video and he can show you different chords All right so once you've got the chords memorized go ahead and practice transitioning between them because in Jesse's version and as well as my own version the chords are very repetitive they follow the same pattern so with my G Chords it's going to follow the pattern g d suspended 4 E minor 7 and C add 9 so go ahead and follow those chords in that order and just practice them until you can transition between them then we can move on to some strumming patterns we can use with this song with all right so you guys know what's up the first strumming pattern we're going to do is just play through the entire song with one downstroke for each chord change that way we can hear where all those chord transitions are going to be so go ahead and put your G chord on CU that's the first chord in the song and we're just going to practice going from G to D suspended 4 to E minor 7 to CAD 9 and now we're just going to play through those on and we're going to sing along with the song that way we know which words and stuff to change our chords on it's the most beautiful time of the year lights fill the street spreading so much Che I should be playing in the winter snow but I'mma be under the mistl toe don't want to miss out on the holiday but I can't stop staring at your face I should be playing in the winter snow but I'mma be under the mistle toe all right that's just an example go ahead and play through the rest of the song just like that so you can familiarize yourself with where those transitions are and then when you're ready we can go ahead and jump into our next strumming pattern all right so here's the strumming pattern I came up with I know it seems really long but it's actually very intuitive once you get the Rhythm down so let me go ahead and play it for you it's down down up up down down up down down up up down down up all right so once you've got that pattern down we can go ahead and add in our chord transitions so we're going to go from G down up down up up down down up D suspended down up up down down up E minor 7 and then C at 9 up down up up down up down down up down up up down up all right and once you've got that pattern down go ahead and try speeding it up just a little bit so we can play it at Tempo with the song down down up down up up down down up down up up down down up it's the most beautiful time of the year lights F the street spreading so much cheer I should be playing in the winter snow but I'mma be under the missile toe don't want to miss out on the holiday but I can't stop staring at your face I should be playing in the winter snow but I'm going be under the mle toe all right and if you thought my Shing pattern was a little bit too complicated or it didn't sound really a lot like the original go ahead again refer to Jesse's tutorial he will teach you a different strumming pattern that sounds a lot more like the pop version of Justin Bieber's song Let's go ahead and give it a listen so it's going to sound something like this sounds awesome right so go ahead and click right here to get to his tutorial video and you can learn this strumming pattern if you would like to and then once you've learned his variation of a strumming pattern go ahead and come back to my video and I will teach you guys a cool picking pattern that you can use with this song way my heart all right so now let's learn that picking pattern if you go ahead and put your G chord on since that's the first chord in our song We'll go ahead and start there what you're going to want to do is you're going to want to take these three fingers your ring middle and index finger and you're going to want to place them on the top E string the B string and the g string respectively okay so your ring finger is on the E your middle finger is on the B and your pointer finger is on the G and if you pick all three of those at the same time it sounds like this all right so for this entire picking pattern these three fingers will always stay on these three strings they won't change what's going to change again is your thumb so with our G chord our thumb is going to be picking the top E string or the sixth string and then after we pick that once we're going to follow that up by playing the top three strings four times 1 2 3 4 so we've got and you can hear whenever I'm picking those top three strings whenever I put my hand back down on the strings I mute them immediately so it gives it that muted sound and we like that that's going to keep our rhythm going a little bit better so we've got G our next chord is D suspended four so if you go ahead and put that chord on again these three fingers are still going to be on the top three strings nothing is changing but our thumb now is going to play our fourth string all right and after you pick that once we're going to follow that up by playing the top three strings four times just like earlier so we've got 1 2 3 4 again that's so string that along with the G we've got d all right our next chord is our E minor 7 so go ahead and put that chord shape on and for E minor 7 again our thumb is going to be playing our bottom sixth string and these three fingers will still be on the top three so now we've got followed by these all right and we're going to play that four times so we've got 1 2 3 4 One More Time all right and then our last chord is our CAD n so go ahead and put that chord shape on and this time our thumb is going to be picking this fifth a string and then these three fingers again are on the top three strings so now we've got all right so that's four times 1 2 3 4 so let's go ahead and put this entire phrasing together we've got g d suspended E minor 7 C add n super simple picking pattern right so let's go ahead and put that all together and sing through part of the song so you can hear what that sounds like so we've got g d suspended 4 E minor 7 C at 9 it's most beautiful time of the year lights fill the street spreading so much cheer I should be playing in the winter snow I'mma Be Under The Missle to don't want to miss out on the holiday but I can't stop staring at your face I should be playing in the winter snow but I'mma Be Under The Missle to and just keeps going just like that for the entire song if you want to pick for the entire song I would highly recommend it I think it's very accurate to the original song and it makes it a little bit more dressy if you don't want to do strumming patterns and I think this is actually how I'm going to be doing the majority of my cover at the end all right and that's it that's the entire picking pattern all right so you guys have learned all the different chords you can use all the different strumming patterns you can use and you've learned the melody line picking as well as the Rhythm picking so let's go ahead and put those elements together and play through the whole whole song of Mistletoe by Justin Bieber good luck I st staring at your face should be in the winter snow it's the most beautiful time of the year lights fill the street spreading so much cheer I should be playing in the winter snow but I'mma be under the mistle toe don't want to miss out on the holiday but I can't stop staring at your face I should be
