hey my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play part of your world from Disney's The Little Mermaid on the guitar here's a quick overview of everything I'll be covering in this tutorial today and with that being said let's go ahead and get started so before we jump right into it there is something a little special I wanted to talk to you guys about regarding the tuning instead of being in standard tuning if you put all of your strings one whole step down or tune them one whole step down then you can play through this song in the original key as the Disney movie however if you wanted to keep your strings in standard tuning and not do any tuning that's totally fine too you could still follow this tutorial through it'll just be a whole step higher than the movie version but basically once you tune your guitar strings a whole step down they should sound like this we'll have d G c f A and D alright so for the rest of this tutorial I will have my guitar tuned a whole step down to match the original movie version anyways let's go ahead and talk about the chords alright guys so I have 15 chord shapes I want to show you to play through this song which I know sounds super intimidating but most of them are very beginner friendly so don't let that get to you let's go ahead and start with our C major chord shape which looks like this and sounds like this foreign if you don't know how to read these chord charts you're seeing on screen I Do cover how to do that in my free beginner course right here on YouTube so make sure to check that out the next chord shape is our D major after that we have our B7 there's also our E minor a chord our A7 are a suspended four C Major seven our B minor D7 G 7 foreign f and lastly is our a minor seven those are the 15 chord shapes to play through this song So as is true with most of these iconic Disney songs there are quite a few chords you need to know in order to play this song so just go ahead and make sure to pause the video and take as much time as you need to memorize these chord shapes as well as transitioning back and forth between them because it will make playing through this song so much easier and if transitioning quick enough is something that you're currently struggling with I would suggest checking out my practice with me Series where we go through the skill together in real time but once you have those memorized and ready to go then we can go ahead and talk about some strumming for this song So if you're a beginner at guitar or somebody who struggles with singing and playing guitar at the same time I would suggest starting out with a practice pattern where you just bring up the song and you're going to do a single down strum for every chord change and you want to do that as you're singing through the song so you get a mental note of where you're going to be making those chord transitions so here's a quick example of the beginning this stuff isn't it neat wouldn't you think my collection's complete wouldn't you think I'm the girl the girl who has everything all right and you would basically want to do this for the entire song and just get really used to where you're making those core transitions like what words you're singing and things like that um there's actually something you can do right now if you check out my patreon page I do have this entire guide available to download and print out to make this process a little easier for you but once you've done that let's go ahead and talk about a more full strumming pattern that you can use all right guys so for strumming my suggestion is just to stick with a very simple down down down up so let's go ahead and zoom in and talk a little bit more about this Rhythm all right guys so we're sticking with a very simple eighth note strumming pattern today it's going to count like this we've got one two three four one two three four and one two three four and down down up down down all right and basically you just want to play this pattern through one time per chord so if we take a closer look at the beginning of the song verse one we're starting with our c chord you would just go down down up to your next chord D down down four look at this right now because this song is not very structured in the way that it kind of flows there are going to be a few chords throughout the song where you might have to repeat this pattern two times or sometimes even four times while you're playing through the song but I will break that down a little more explicitly in my play along but basically this is just my suggestion for strumming just keep it really simple so that the vocals can really shine here so go ahead and pause and practice this strumming pattern if you need to and then when we get back we can talk about finger picking alright guys so let's go ahead and talk about some finger picking patterns I did come up with two different ones I think both sound really beautiful with this song and I'm gonna go ahead and start with the slightly easier one basically let's break down our right hand first or picking hand what I think you should do is go ahead and put your pointer middle and ring finger and put those on the bottom three strings the g b and e and they're basically gonna just live here on these three strings for the entire picking pattern what string your thumb is playing is going to depend on what chord shape you're playing so for instance with our c chord your thumb would be on the a string since that's the C the root note and basically you just want to go down the guitar all right and so like I said earlier since this song is not super structured I'm just going to go ahead and go through every chord that you'll need to know and how to play it with this picking pattern so therefore you can like put it together with the song on your own so with our c chord we have this and for each of these you want to repeat it twice all right for D chord notice how my thumb is changing strings between these chords B7 E minor a A7 a suspended four C Major seven B minor D7 G 7 C minor f a minor seven all right so really the hardest part about this picking pattern is just remembering to change your thumb around to whichever string has the bass note or the root note of every chord but once you get the hang of how your right hand feels with this picking all you want to do is put in order to play through the song so I'm going to go ahead and show you what the beginning of the song would sound like with this picking pattern so starting with our c twice for each chord remember and basically you could use this picking pattern for the whole song look at this stuff isn't it wouldn't you think my collection's complete wouldn't you think I'm the girl who has everything somebody who enjoys you know picking your strings separately then this is a great one for you basically you still want to keep these three fingers on those bottom three strings they're still going to live there and again your thumb is going to rotate around based on what chord you're playing the only thing that's changing is the pattern that we're going to be playing with our right hand so for example if we put our c port on now instead of just going down the guitar we're going to kind of take a few more steps so we have more of an arpeggiated kind of picking pattern all right and because this picking pattern is a little bit longer you'd only have to play it one time through for each chord instead of repeating it twice like we did with picking pattern one so again I'm just going to go through each of the chords that are used in this song with this picking pattern so that you can kind of pause and just practice on your own so you can put it in context with the song So for C we have for D B7 E minor a A7 a suspended four C Major seven B minor D7 g seven C minor F and a minor seven all right so again you would want to kind of go through the song and depending on which picking pattern you prefer you could just go through and play through the song with each of these picking patterns so just a little sample of what the second picking pattern would sound like what this song would sound like this look at this stuff isn't it neat wouldn't you think my collection's complete wouldn't you think I'm the girl the girl who has everything all right and again this could apply for the whole song I think either of these picking patterns really sound super beautiful with this song and really matches the original quality of the song in the Disney movie go ahead and take as much
