hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm gonna be showing you guys how to play rain on me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you want to learn and also make sure to subscribe to my channel that way you don't miss out on any new tutorials so this song is gonna be not too bad if you're a beginner you do want to make sure your guitar is in standard tuning with your capo on your fourth fret so if you want to play this in the original key on top of that you'll need to know five chords now one of them is a Barre chord and it is played quite often in this song but no worries I'm going to teach you an alternate fingering for that chord in the chord section if that's something that you're interested in or if Barre chords are something you're having trouble with and on top of that we also have four different strumming patterns I want to show you however don't freak out this is gonna be kind of a choose your own adventure type tutorial where you can apply any one of the strumming patterns so I'm gonna show you two the entire song so you don't have to learn all four but we'll get more into that when we get into the strumming section yeah let's go ahead and start this video off with an overview of what I will be teaching you in this like I said at the beginning you will need to know five chords to play through this song those are a minor E minor F G and D minor so if you already familiar with all of those chords and that's perfect we can move on but if you do need a refresher or wants to take a closer look at those chords make sure to skip to this time here where I will go through the fingering and all of that stuff with you also like I said at the beginning there are gonna be quite a few different strumming patterns that I'll show you in this tutorial however remember it's kind of a choose-your-own-adventure type way where you can apply any of these strumming patterns for the whole song so you don't have to learn all of them if you don't want to we're gonna start out with the first strumming pattern which is just one simple down strum on the beat for every chord change now this song does go really fast so I do think it sounds perfectly fine to just do this one down strum strumming pattern which is super simple if you feel like this is too simplistic for you then that's totally fine we can move on but if you do want to get a closer look at how that would sound in the song then go ahead and skip to this time here where I will take you through an example of what it sounds like with just the one down strum strumming pattern now an easy way to spice up the first strumming pattern is just by adding another down strum so our second strumming pattern is just two down strums for every chord change again it sounds really good with the song if you feel like you want to venture into what this would sound like then go ahead and skip to this time here where I will go through the second strumming pattern with you but if you do want to challenge yourself to spice things up a little bit more we have strumming pattern 3 which is down up down up down and it's gonna sound a little something like this now this is the strumming pattern I like to use during the choruses but you can feel free to use that throughout the song again if you want to go through a closer example of what this looks like and I can break it down for you and go through some examples in the song with you make sure to skip to this time here where I will break down strumming pattern 3 however if you feel like you got it already but just watching me then that's totally fine and we'll move on to the last drumming pattern I want to show you which is strumming pattern 4 so as you can see strumming pattern 4 is the longest of the patterns it does have strumming pattern 3 in it at the beginning but we're adding an extra up down down down up so the whole pattern is going to be down up down up down up down down down up it's gonna sound a little something like this I know this pattern seems really long but the song does go really fast so it kind of is more intuitive once you get into the rhythm so if you want me to break down this strumming pattern for you and do it a little bit slowly and kind of show you how you can use it in the song go ahead and just skip to this time here so we can go to a strumming pattern for however if you feel comfortable with all the strumming patterns that I just showed you you should know that in my cover at the end I like to kind of mix all of them together and use them all at one point of the song for the other so if you want to see that go ahead and skip to the play through here at the end where I have all of the chords and lyrics and everything on screen in front of you and I'll go through the whole song yeah if you want to take a closer look at any of these sections let's go ahead and get more into the in-depth part of this tutorial and we'll start with the chorus all right so let's take a closer look these chords like I said there are five and we're going to start out with our a minor chord which looks like this and sounds like this after that we've got our E minor chord which looks like this and sounds like this the next chord you need to know is F which is our Barre chord which looks like this and sounds like this as promised if bar chords are hard for you I do have an alternate fingering you can actually play fmaj7 which looks like this and sounds like this so you can use this to replace f in this song if you want to and then after that we've got our G chord which looks like this and sounds like this and then the last chord you need to know is our D minor chord which looks like this and sounds like this and those are the only chords you need to know for this song alright so once you have those chords memorized I really strongly suggest that you take the time to learn how to transition between them again this song moves really really quickly so being able to transition from one chord to the other is gonna be really important skill to have here I do have a video on how to transition between chords faster if that's something that you're working on so make sure to check that out so yeah just make sure that when you learn these chords that you can transition between them pretty smoothly before going into these strumming patterns because it will make your life a lot easier when you can transition between them but with that being said let's go ahead and jump into the strumming patterns that you can use with this song all right so let's take a closer look at these strumming patterns that you can use with this song like I said the first one is just gonna be a simple one down strum on the beat for every chord change this is gonna be a really great way to kind of get used to the song and get used to those transitions before you jump into some faster strumming patterns so I'm gonna go ahead and put my a minor chord down since that's the first chord in the song and I'll go ahead and put the rest of the progression up here on screen for you and all we're gonna do is do one down strum for each chord change okay so we've got a minor strum down once then we go to E minor strum down once then you go to F strum down once all right simple enough but remember this song does go really fast so it's gonna be more like this all right so go ahead and try that with me 1 2 1 2 3 4 super fast right keep doing it with me a minor all right so once you get it at that speed it's actually kind of already in rhythm and I'll show you what I mean by adding in the first verse so we've got one two one two three four all right so again like I said you can actually apply this one down strum strumming pattern for the entire song and I think it sounds perfectly fine because of how quickly this song moves however I do have a few other strumming patterns that I want to show you so let's go ahead and move on to strumming pattern - alright so like I said strumming pattern - is just two down strums instead of one so it's gonna be very similar to what we just played except we're doubling down on everything that we're doing so again let me put the chord progressions here on screen for you we're starting with our a minor chord and now instead of just um strumming down once you want to strum down twice so we've got a minor twice B minor twice and then if you just want to play once all right so we're doubling down on the a minor and the E minor chords so we've got a minor twice minor twice and then all right so now you just want to get that in rhythm so we've got all right do you hear that let's try it together one two one two three four again getting it so that's basically this entire pattern now I like to use this during the pre choruses and let me go ahead and show you what that sounds like we're gonna play exactly what we just did at the exact same tempo 1 2 1 2 3 4 comment down on me all right so basically that's the only place that I like to use the double strum pattern in the song but like I said it will work for the entire song so if you wanted you just doubles down strums on the entire song that'll sound great too but let's go ahead and move on to the third strumming pattern so as you can see the third strumming pattern is down up down up down it does seem a little bit long but I'm going to give you a little hint right here it's very similar to the second strumming pattern with just the down strums the only difference is now when you strum down you want to just strum back up that same chord okay so let's go ahead and put our a minor chord down and so what you're gonna do is strum down and then on your way back up just strum the chords again down up down up down all right those are the motions do that with me with our a minor chord on down up down up all right nice so now the thing is this song again moves very fast so what we're gonna do is we're actually going to put some of these chord transitions in the middle of our strumming pattern so let me put that on screen for you so you can see what I mean so you can see for our a minor chord we're just gonna do the first down up then you switch to your E major chord do the next down up and then on the F you would leave that one down strum all right so we've got a minor E minor all right good so let's try that a little faster one two one two three four a minor E minor F all right great so once you get that all you want to do is go backwards on the chord progression so we just went from E minor to E minor to F and now all you want to do is go the other way so we go from F to E minor to a minor all right and that I will be honest with you is the majority of the song is just this little progression right here so let's do that again with our a minor chord on we've got down up to E minor down up to F down then go backwards to F down up to E minor down up to a minor all right so you can hopefully hear the song by now that is the rhythm that we're gonna be doing so now keep in mind this is gonna go really fast at the original tempo almost twice as fast as we're playing it so let me go ahead and show you what that sounds like I got my a minor chord on so did you hear the ups in there they're barely audible because of how fast we're going so go ahead and put your a minor chord on and try that with me we've got a minor minor tab and what you can see too is I sometimes will add a mute to the end of each of those phrases I just don't like these strings to ring that much because I think this song sounds very like Dancy and stuff so it's kind of more rhythmic if you do it that way so feel free to add that in if you want to as well that is the third strumming pattern this is probably my favorite strumming pattern to use in the song I do think it's very accurate however there is one extra strumming pattern that I wanted to show you guys where you can add on more stuff to strumming pattern 3 to kind of fill in some of that empty space so let's go ahead and jump into our fourth and last strumming pattern alright so as you can see our fourth strumming pattern is the longest one however don't let this intimidate you it is very similar to our third strumming pattern that we just practiced so as you can see the whole thing is down up down up down which was strumming pattern 3 and then we're adding on to it up down down down up alright so let me go ahead and go through the motions with you let's put our a minor chord on so again we're doing the same thing as strumming pattern 3 but then we're gonna finish out this phrase with an extra up down down down alright it'll make a lot more sense when I put it in rhythm so let me play it for you in rhythm so you can hear it down up down down down down all right so that's the rhythm but again we're going to be switching chords in the middle of this strumming pattern so again let me put that on screen so you can see where we're gonna be switching those chords so it's gonna be very similar to strumming pattern 3 you want to start it off a minor E minor F but then you want to finish out this pattern on your F chord up down down down alright let me tell you that again we've got a all right so why don't you try that with me go to a minor chord on down up down down one more time all right so now once you've played that through again you just want to switch the chord order to go backwards F to E minor a minor and it's the same thing so we've got F down up D minor down up and then hold the rest of this pattern out with your a minor all right so let's put that whole thing together we've got a minor a minor again this strumming pattern goes really fast in this song but it does sound really really cool however if you're finding it difficult to keep up you can always do strumming pattern 3 or 2 or 1 with this whole song and I think all of them sound pretty great but let's go ahead and go through strumming pattern 4 at full speed so you can hear what it sounds like in the song 1 2 1 2 3 4 all right so again this pattern this chord progression and everything it's very prominent throughout the song this is the majority of the song follows this right here so if you can play it with me at that tempo with those chord transitions and everything then you're going to do find it throughout the song but that does conclude the different strumming patterns I thought you could use to play through this song so now let's go ahead and put everything we learned together we've got those chords memorized we've practiced transitioning between them and we've practiced all of those strumming patterns let's put all of that together to go through the entire song again at the end here I will have the lyrics on screen with the chord changes and everything that you need to know on screen in front of you will also be noting which strumming pattern I'm using in which part of the song in case you want to follow my cover but like I said you can choose any of those strumming patterns and plate for the whole thing so anyways let's go ahead and jump into our play through at the end is gonna be rain on me by lady gaga and
