hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play real friends by Camila Kibeho on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you want to learn and really fell in love with the guitar part which is actually a lot easier to play than you might think this song itself is actually pretty beginner friendly as well because there's only five chords you need to know for the whole song and none of them are bard chords and there's only one real strumming pattern or picking pattern it's kind of the same rhythm but I'll show you both ways depending on what you're more comfortable with so with that being said let's go ahead and put our Capo's on the 3rd fret of your guitar if you want to sing it in the same key as kamila if you don't have a capo you can watch my TMT on how to make your own capo or you can play through this entire tutorial without a capo it will be the exact same chords and everything it'll just be a little bit lower than Camila's version so with that being said let's go ahead and get started with those chords knock into the moon feeling so alone and added alright so let's go ahead and jump into the five chords you need to know the first one is a minor seven which looks like this and sounds like this after that you need to know D minor seven which looks like this and sounds like this and remember the ex is me not to play those strings so for this chord you will not want to be strumming your top two strings okay after that we have G which looks like this and sounds like this the next chord you need to know is C which looks like this and sounds like this and then the last chord you need to know is C slash B which looks like this and sounds like this so for those of you who might not be familiar with this cord we do have an X in the middle of our strumming so instead of strumming straight down you're going to want to try to avoid playing that forth D string it'll be a lot easier if you want to pick the four strings that you need but for the purpose of this tutorial if you do want to just strum the long five strings it's not going to sound too terribly bad so just remember that if you're going to do the strumming pattern you can go ahead and strum all five strings but I would suggest picking where you can just pick the four that you need all right and those are the five chords you need to know for this song alright so after you have those chords memorized go ahead and take a minute to practice transitioning between them because this song does follow the same chord progression through the whole song which is a minor 7 to d minor 7 to G to C and then C /b if you can do that progression in that order and you can transition between those cords pretty smoothly then you can go ahead and continue this video and the strumming and picking will be a lot easier for you to handle all I ever do is let me down at somebody then I'm down with their own alright so let's go ahead and jump into those strumming patterns like I always suggest if you're a complete beginner the best thing to do is to go through the entire song and you just want to strum each chord with one down strum that way you know where all of those chord transitions will be happening and you can kind of get a feel for the rhythm as well as what word you'll be singing when you're changing those chords so go ahead and put your a minor 7 chord on since that's the first chord in the song and I'm gonna just go ahead and show you an example of what this would be like for when you want to do this practice pattern so we've got our a -7 just one down strum then our D minor 7 1 down strum then G and then C and C / me and so now go ahead and put those words with it so you can practice those transitions no I think I'll stand skip the conversations and the oh I'm fine now I'm no stranger to surprise this paper town has let me down too many times alright and just like that you want to go through the rest of the song make sure you can transition between those chords without having to stop too much and also know what word you'll be singing when you're doing those transitions once you have that down let's go ahead and jump into our strumming pattern that you'll be using with this song it's really super simple here it is it's just down up mute so let me go ahead and take you through an example of what this sounds like I have my a minor 7 chord on you're just gonna strum down and then and then mute the strings but you want to do it kind of quickly so it sounds like this so pretty much what I'm doing is on my way up I'm kind of stopping the strings as I go up like right when you play them you want to stop them and I'm kind of just using the fist cuz I am NOT using a pick with this song I'm just using the side of my thumb so when I strum down and then back up I immediately take the rest of my hand my fist and I just kind of meet the strings like that alright so why don't you go ahead and put your a minor 7 chord on and try that with me we've got down mute it alright now go ahead and put that in rhythm one more time so you can see that up and mute come really fast down alright so once you have that rhythm down let's go ahead and add in those core transitions you're going to want to play this pattern through twice for each chord so let me take you through an example I have my a minor seven chord on we have it twice D minor seven twice G and then here on the C and the C /b chords you want to play the pattern through only once so we have seen and then switch to C /b alright so let's go ahead and go through that whole thing without stop we've got too many and then once you can play that rhythm and add in all those chord transitions and everything that's pretty much the entire song because the horse's song does follow that same pattern in that same order with the same strumming so if that's what you want to do as far as strumming goes you can play through the whole song with this if you do want to make it sound a little bit more like the original though there is a picking pattern I wanted to show you that sounds a little bit closer to camellias original version so let me go ahead and zoom in and show you guys the picking pattern you can use with this song but I find out what they're all about all right so I've sumed it a little bit for this picking pattern again like I said it sounds really cool but it's actually really easy to play so let me go ahead and show you how it's done if you start by putting your a minor 7 chord on what we're gonna do is with our thumb you're going to pick the fifth a string and then with your first and second finger or your pointer and middle finger you're going to want to put them on the G and B strings I like to actually number my strings and think about them in numbers so if that helps you I will number them here so your thumb is gonna be on the fifth string and then your pointer finger is going to be on the third string followed by your middle finger on the second string now when you pick those strings together you should hear that and what we're gonna do is it's gonna follow the strumming pattern you're going to pick your thumb first then follow it with your other two fingers and then you're gonna go ahead and mute the strings so again we've got to mute and again you want to put that in rhythm so see how quickly you meet the strings after picking with your first and second finger all right so go ahead and put your a minor seven chord on and try that with me we've got some other two mute now in rhythm one more time all right and that's a minor seven and again this rhythm is going to be the same for all the other chords but we are going to change which strings were picking with our fingers for each chord so we've got a minor seven let's go ahead and move to our D minor seven chord with D minor seven you're going to want to switch your thumb over to the fourth string and then these two fingers are going to move down one string each so they're gonna be on the second and first string so we've got 4 2 & 1 and again you want to put in that mute and play it in rhythm so we've got so now practicing with those transitions we've got a minor 7 d minor 7 alright after that we have our G chord and with our G you're going to want to put your thumb on the 6th string and then your pointer and middle finger are going to move back to the 3rd and 2nd string so we've got 6 3 & 2 six three two so in rhythm we've got again so now we've got a minor seven twice D minor seven twice G twice now from here we're moving on to our C chord with our C chord your thumb is going to be on the fifth string and your other two fingers will be on the top two strings again so now we've got five two and one five two and one and from here we're moving to our C slash B chord and you're gonna actually play the exact same string so we've got five three and two so we've got c c /b alright so if we put that whole thing together we've got a -7 d minor 7 g c c /b and now one of the questions i get asked a lot is why do i always do the chord positions if i'm not even picking at those strings and the answer for that is i like to put my chord position down just in case i accidentally pick the wrong string or a different string it'll still sound ok because the chord is still in the right position but if you are more of a minimalistic person then i will go ahead and show you which fingers you absolutely need to have down with your left hand in order to do this picking pattern alright so i've sumed out a little bit so you can see both hands so now if you do the picking pattern and you only want to know exactly what fingers you need on your left hand to play through the pattern i will show that to you now for a minor 7 the only finger you will need to put down is your first finger and that'll still work for that then for D minor seven you want to kind of bar these top two with your first finger and that's all you have to do for that cord then 4G instead of playing the whole chord all you need is your middle finger and then foresee all you need is your third finger your ring finger and your first finger so your middle finger can't be taken off and then when you do your c /b chord you just move your second finger right behind your third so again with your minimalistic fingering it would just be like this but like I said I like to just go ahead and put the entire cord down it's really up to you whichever way you prefer or think is easier to play now there is one more thing I wanted to show you guys with picking on your D minor seven chord you can't hear that there's a little bit of a frill going on I was trying to figure out an easy way to play that that kind of sounds like the original and I think that this is probably one of the easiest ways you can play it so after you do your a minor seven chord you move to your D minor seven chord and again I'm just borrowing these top two strings if you want to add that frill on that D what I like to do is take my ring finger and put that on the third fret of my top E string and then you flick it off and so you get that sound from your first finger see see I'm only picking with my right hand one time on that top E string and then you want to do the same thing one string over so again your ring finger is going to pull off so you've got if you do it fast enough it does sound kind of like camellias version and it's a relatively easy thing to do since your fingers are already in this position so you've got a minor 7 d minor 7 so on that second time instead of muting those strings all I'm doing is I'm picking my top E string hammering my third finger down flicking it off and then picking it on the B string and then flicking it off again all right one more time so if you want to add that into your cover you can it's an easy way to kind of dress up that D chord and make it sound a little bit closer to the original so if you want to add that frill into your D chord you just want to add that in really quickly and then move on and continue with the rest of the round so we've got a minor seven D minor seven with the frill then go straight into your G chord so just an extra option for those of you who want to add that in there of course it's not necessary I actually don't like to add that in most of the time so go ahead and practice through those picking patterns and then when you're ready we can move on and put everything we've learned together to play through the whole song alright so once you have all the chords memorized and you can transition between them and you have that strumming or picking pattern down depending on which version you want to play let's go ahead and put everything we've learned together so we can play there's a whole song of real friends by kamila Kibeho I will list all the lyrics and chord changes and everything on screen in front of you and I will be playing it through with the picking pattern just because that's the way I prefer but feel free to do strumming along if you like so let's go ahead and pick up our guitars and play through the whole song good luck no no
