hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm gonna be showing you guys how to play say so by doja cat on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you want to learn so this song is actually gonna be super beginner-friendly my guitar is in standard tuning and you don't eat a capo to play this in the original key on top of that we only have four chords for the whole song and one real strumming pattern and that's all you need so in this tutorial I will be using my electric guitar but you could totally follow this through with your acoustic guitar and it would be exactly the same thing you play it the same way just on a different guitar but I decided to switch it up and use my electric today so let's go ahead and jump into an overview of what I'll be teaching you in this tutorial so like I said you're gonna need to know four chords for this song and those are a minor a seven D major 7 and B 7 so if you already know those chords and that's perfect and great we'll move on but if you are unfamiliar with any of them go ahead and skip to this time here and I will break it down for you and show you how to play all of those chords after that we're gonna jump into our strumming patterns and I'm gonna start out with a practice pattern if you're brand new to guitar I always suggest that you do this first and it's just gonna be one simple down strum on the B for every chord change so if you think that you don't need to do that we can skip on but if you want to go through an example of what this practice pattern would sound like make sure to check out this time right here where I will walk you through it and go through an example in the song with you and then after that we're gonna go into our real strumming pattern that I like to use for this song this is a super simple strumming pattern as you can see it's just down up mute down mute and it's gonna sound a little something like this so if you feel like you already got the rhythm of that pattern then that's awesome we're gonna just play that through once for every single chord change but if you want me to break it down for you a little bit more and take you more slowly through an example go ahead and skip to this time here where I will break down the strumming pattern for you but after that we will go into the entire song and we'll play through it and I'll have everything on screen in front of you so if you want to skip over to that with all the lyrics and chords and everything like that go ahead and skip to the play through here at the and and I'll go through the whole song with you with everything on screen that you need but yeah if you wanted to break this down a little bit more closely let's go ahead and jump into the in-depth part of this tutorial and we'll start with the chords alright so like I said there's only four chords you need to know to play this whole song let's go ahead and start with our E minor chord which looks like this and sounds like this after that we've got our a7 chord which looks like this and sounds like this the next chord after that is our D major seven chord which looks like this and sounds like this and then the last chord you need to know for this song is b7 which looks like this and sounds like this and those are the only four chords you need to know to play the song all right so once you have those chords memorized make sure you can transition between them because the beauty of this song is that the entire song follows the exact same chord progression which is from E minor to a7 to D major seven to b7 so as long as you can transition between those pretty easily you're not gonna have a problem with the strumming pattern so I definitely take the time to make sure you can transition between them and if that's something that you need help with I do have a video right here about how to transition between your chords faster so make sure to check that out if that's something that you need help with but from there let's go ahead and jump into these strumming patterns that you can use with this phone so if you're familiar with any of my other tutorials I always start with a practice pattern which is just one simple down strum on the beat for every chord change this is really great if you're brand new to guitar to kind of help you feel out the song and get used to where those chord transitions are going to be that way when you throw in the strumming pattern it'll be a lot simpler so let's go ahead and go through an example of this I have my E minor chord on since that's the first chord in the song and you're just gonna strum it down once then you would switch to your next one which is a seven strum back down once then we have D major seven strum down once and then B seven strum down once all right and that's the whole strumming pattern so let's go ahead and go through a practice run 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 switch 1 2 3 switch 2 3 switch a minor a seven d major 7 besa hahaha words to this song so alright perfect so go ahead and do that for the rest of the song just to make sure you know where those chord transitions are gonna be this one's pretty simple because it's very on the beat but once you get through that let's go ahead and jump into the strumming pattern that I want to show you that you can use for this song so the strumming pattern I have for you is super simple as you can see it's just down up mute down mute and we're gonna do this one time through for every single chord change and it's just a really basic rhythm that you can use for the entire song so let's go ahead and go through the motions of this strumming pattern so go ahead put your eat mine accord on since that's the first chord in the song and let's just go through the motions so we've got down and then you go up and then mute so what I'm doing when I'm muting the strings is I'm just taking the side of my hand and I'm just kind of tapping the strings to get them to stop ringing to me up them alright and so we've got down up mute back down and then mute all right so that's the motions let's make sure we got the rhythm down so let me play it for you once did you hear that we've got down up down mute so why don't you guys put your minor chord on and try that with me 1 2 3 4 down down down awesome so once you have that pattern down let's go ahead and put in our core transition so let me put that back up on screen and now we're going to play through this pattern once for each chord so starting with our E minor we've got down down mute switch to a7 down mute D major seven down up mute b7 alright and that's the whole thing all right and perfect once you've got that that is about the tempo that will be going here at the end and that's everything you need to know to play through this song like I said it's super beginner friendly and really fun to play so once you have those chords memorized and you can transition between them and you practice that strumming pattern let's go ahead and put all of those elements together so we can play through the whole song again I will have everything that you need to know on screen in front of you and just so you guys know I won't be doing a full cover I'm just gonna go through the chorus or the beginning part and the first verse just know that this entire song can be played with this exact same pattern okay so yeah let's go ahead and jump into our
