hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be teaching you guys how to play shallow from the movie a star is born by Lady gaga and Bradley Cooper so stay tuned that this is something that you want to learn all right so fair warning if you are going to attempt the picking portion of this song it is a little bit more advanced so if you are a complete beginner I would definitely suggest sticking with strumming through this song or maybe even checking out another tutorial of mind that's a little bit more easy but this song is beautiful and once you get the thinking pattern down it kind of repeats itself through the whole song so you really only have to learn it once and then you can sing the whole song but with that being said you won't need any capo to play this in the original key and along with that you will be wondering eight chords to play this song as well as two strumming patterns and that picking pattern that you hear at the beginning of the song so with all of that being said let's go ahead and jump into what those courts look like so there are quite a few chords you need to know to play this song through I think earlier I said there were eight but I think there's actually nine so let's go ahead and jump into them the first one you need to know is a minor 7 which looks like this and sounds like this after that we have F sharp minor which looks like this and sounds like this next we have G which looks like this and sounds like this after that we have C which looks like this and sounds like this the next chord after that is d which looks like this and sounds like this after that we have our regular a minor which looks like this and sounds like this after that we've got a minor which looks like this and sounds like this then we have a which looks like this and sounds like this and then our last chord is probably the hardest one it's gonna be our only Barre chord for this song which is B minor and it looks like this and sounds like this all right and those are the chords you need to know to play through this song alright so once you have those chord shapes memorized and you're pretty good at transitioning between them let's go ahead and start with some strumming patterns that you can use with this song so the first strumming pattern I always suggest is just one down strum on the beat with every chord change it's a really good way to kind of just get used to the song and listen for where all of those chord transitions will be so I'm gonna go ahead and take you through the chorus and just kind of give you an example of what this would sound like I'm gonna put my a minor chord on cuz that's the first chord in the chorus we're just gonna strum it down one go to our next chord D then we have G D E minor and so you would want to take this through the whole song and just kind of sing it to yourself so you know where to expect those transitions we're from the show super simple very basic and you can actually play that through the whole song if you really wanted to in your very beginner and that's what you're comfortable with I would totally suggest that it would sound fine if you did that but let me go ahead and move on to our first real strumming pattern and this is a pattern that I actually do use in my cover of the song so here it is as you can see it's just down and down up up down up and what I'm going to do is I'm gonna play this through for every chord change so again with that chorus let's put our a minor chord down it's just down down it's the whole pattern so play that through with me we've got down down up down and so with the course it's going to change chords kind of quickly sometimes so with our a minor chord I would play through the whole pattern down down up then you would switch to D and do the same thing down down up up down but then right here in the chorus it kind of switches chords pretty fast so for this next portion instead of playing the whole chord or the whole pattern through I'm going to just change it to down down up for each chord so with our G chord we've got down down up then we switch to our D chord down down up then we switch petite minor and go back to the original pattern down down up down so let me play that through for you once without stopping we've got our a minor chord on up down down up up down up g down up d down up e minor down up down so you really want to just do that in the course because it changes chords so quickly that you don't have time to the whole pattern through so let me go ahead and add some singing so you can hear what that sounds like all right and again that this is a pattern that you could apply through the whole rest of the song including the verses and stuff like that so go ahead and practice that through a pause the video if you need to pause and practice a little bit more but I'm going to go ahead and move on to our second strumming pattern that you can use with this song so the second strumming pattern is as follows as you can see it's just eight down strums the only place that I like to use it is during the bridge because I think it sounds really good there and kind of builds up the attention and the emotional like state of a song and stuff like that so I'm gonna go ahead and start with my B minor chord on since that's the first chord in the bridge and what I'm gonna do is just strum this chord down eight times one two three four five six all down strums very simple so go ahead and put your B minor chord on and try that with me we've got 1 2 3 4 5 that's it that's the whole pattern so once you put in some of those chord transitions you can kind of hear what it sounds like in the pre in the bridge we've got B minor 2 3 4 5 2 D 2 3 4 5 6 the Hey finance and so like you can see the whole showing pattern is just all down strums now what I want you to do is go ahead and speed it up a little bit so again on a B minor chord we've got one two three four five six three two three four five six and A two three four five six seven eight d a okay and then once you get that down the last thing I want you to add in is a little bit of some accent beats what you want to do is strum a little bit like extra fours like I'm not too hard but you want to kind of accent the first fourth and seventh beats in this pattern so let me just go ahead and show you what that sounds like with my B minor chord on I've got one two and this is really gonna pump that rhythm forward for this part of the song and it really just sounds really great with that so let me go ahead and play it through again why don't you go ahead and put your B minor chord on and follow through with me we've got B minor and then again once you have the accents down that go ahead and add in those chord transitions again we've got B mine the minor d Hey so again like I said I just like to use that pattern through for the bridge it really just helps build some of that you know tension into back into the chorus so again that's all optional if you want to use that or not you can definitely just stick with the first German pattern I showed you for the whole song if that's what you're comfortable with but once we have these strumming patterns down I'm going to go ahead and show you that picking pattern that you can hear at the beginning of the song which is beautiful I love it so um let's go ahead and jump into how to play that all right so it seemed in a little bit so we can learn this picking pattern so let's go ahead and jump right into it if you put your iman or seven chord on that's the first chord we're gonna start on with our picking what you're going to do is take your thumb and pick the bottom east string and then go ahead and prepare your other two fingers which will be your pointer and your middle we're going to put that on the third and second string or G and B respectively so we have our thumb on the low E string or point your finger on the g string and our middle finger on the B string okay so what we're gonna do is pick the low E string twice in a row then your middle finger on the second string then your pointer finger on the third string so do that again six six two three and you might be noticing that we have our chord shape down but we're really not picking any of the strings where our fingers are actually holding down the strings so if you find it easier just to pick the notes that you actually need then all you need to put down right now is your ring finger so it'll be the same but I'm gonna go ahead and give you guys one of my secrets or my tips whenever I do picking patterns I tend to try to keep my chord shape down for the whole picking pattern even if I'm not picking those strings and the reason for that is if you're in the middle of a live performance or a cover or something and you accidentally pick a string you're not supposed to if you have your chord shape down you know that that note is still gonna sound good because it's part of that chord shape so I just like to do it kind of like a safety net in case I accidentally picked the wrong strings if I'm singing a live cover or something it would still sound okay but again that's personal preference if you just want to keep down the finger you need that would just be your ring finger all right but for the rest of the tutorial I'm gonna go ahead and keep my chord shape down just cuz that's the way I like to play and I think that that's a good way to learn picking patterns so okay on our E minor seven we've got six six two three from here let's go ahead and move on to our next chord which is our F sharp minor so you're moving your fingers from the inner two strings here to the outer two strings like that and our picking fingers are still going to be on the same string so we still have our thumb on six our pointer on third and our middle finger on second so now what you want to do is pick your sixth string again and then go ahead and pick your third and second string together so we've got 6 3 into 6 3 & 2 all right so let's go ahead and put that together with our E minor seven we've got our E minor seven chord on six six two three switch to F sharp minor six two and three together okay and then from here we're going to go to our G chord and this time you're just going to pick all three strings together six three and two all right so we've got a minor seven six two three f-sharp minor 6 2 & 3 together g 6 2 & 3 all together all three ones alright one more time and then one more thing you can see what I'm doing after that f-sharp minor chord I'm kind of slapping the strings right here around my sound hole to give it a little bit of a mute and that helps with the rhythm so we've got slap and then you play your G okay so go over that with me one more time we've got our E minor seven chord on six six two three F sharp minor six two and three slap G 63 all at once all right good you're halfway there let's go ahead and go to our next chord which is our C chord now what you're going to want to do is move your thumb down to the fifth string but your other two fingers will still be on the third and the second string we'll see what we're going to do is pick each string individually from bottom to top so we've got five three two five three two okay and so from here we're gonna add something that you may not be familiar with we're gonna hammer on our pinkie on to this second string so you can see when you're picking the C chord when you pick each string it rings for a pretty good amount of time so at that second string is ringing you want to take your pinkie and hammer it down to the third fret this may be a really uncomfortable feeling for anyone who's a little bit more new to guitar because generally speaking your pinkie probably doesn't have as much of a callus as your other fingers but that's okay it's just something that takes practice so you can actually do it without picking on your right hand at all you should be able to hammer that pinky down with enough force that you can hear a tone come from your guitar without even picking the string with your picking hand okay so try that again we've got C we've got five three two all right if you need to pause the video and just practice this for a good you know two minutes or something I would definitely suggest it and again like I said if it starts to hurt your pinkie that's normal you just have to get used to it and develop a callus okay all right so with our C code we've got five three two hammer pinkie on and then pretty much just after you hammer it on what you want to do now is flick it off when you take it off it'll go back to that original tone okay so practice that with me 5:3 to hammer on flick off right so now let's go back to the beginning with our E minor seven six six two three F sharp minor six two and three g6 two and three all together go to c5 three to hammer on flick off okay so after you get that far we're going to stay on our C chord after you hammer on and flick off with your pinkie go ahead and pick your third string with your pointer finger one more time so we've got five three to hammer on flick off three and then you're gonna take your ring finger and pick the top E string and then you're going to take your middle finger and pick the second string and that's the whole C chord so five three to hammer on flick off three one two let's do that one more time five three to hammer on flick off three one two okay and then from here let's go ahead and finish out this phrase we're gonna go to our G chord it's with our G we've got ours you're gonna take your thumb and pick the bottom six string then take these three fingers put them on the top three strings and pick them all together at the same time so we've got all right and then the last chord is D and you're just gonna pick those same bottom three or top three strings again so we've got six three and two on G then we go to D and do three two one on the whole thing so we've got let's start again from our see we've got five three to hammer on flick off three one two go to your cheek or six three two one and then D three two one and then one more thing you'll notice that I'll do is between the G and the D chord I slap the strings again so I have g-d again six three two one slap D three two one all right so let's put the whole thing together again from E minor seven six two three go to have sharp minor six two and three g6 two three all together go to your C 5 3 to hammer on flick off three one two go back to g6 three two one d three two one so let's play to that whole thing one more time without stopping all right good and so all you have left now is that last little bit that sounds really cool and again what we're gonna do is do another hammer-on flick off action but this time we're going to use our middle finger on the D the D chord okay so after you just picked your three notes what you're going to want to do is go back use your ring finger pick that top E string again but we're going to take our finger our middle finger off so you're picking the open E string and then again while it's ringing you're gonna hammer on your second finger onto that second fret on the top a string and then again just like we did earlier after you hammer it on you're just gonna flick it off alright one smooth motion all right so now you just want to practice making it a little faster that's about how fast it should go so we've got G D and then to finish out the phrase just make your stick is stringing in and then your third string again so practice the D with me again we've got three two one hammer and flick second third three two one hammer on flick off two three so let's put that with the g63 to one slap d three two one hammer on two three and then congratulations that's the whole picking pattern so let's put it back together again a minor 7 F sharp minor slap gee see gee slap D Frell so I know I said that this was going to be a little bit hard and it will definitely take a little bit of practice but like I said at the beginning of the video once you get it down it repeats itself throughout the whole song and all of the verses so what you are a little more fluent at it you really don't need to learn anything else because it's just this and then that strumming pattern all right so like I said definitely pause the video rewind as much as you need and just keep practicing it it may take you a few hours or a few days to get it under your belt but it's definitely worth it because it's beautiful and sounds great in the song okay so once you have those chords memorized that these strumming patterns down and you've tackled that picking pattern let's go ahead and put all those elements together so we can play through the whole song I'm gonna have all the chords and chord changes and lyrics and everything listed on screen in front of you as well as in this top corner I will be putting what strumming or picking pattern I'm using for which part of the song if you want to follow along with my cover again like I said earlier in the video you can choose whatever pattern you like to play and do it for whatever part of the song you want to do it's your cover and feel free to experiment and play around or even come up with your own strumming pattern if you want to but without further ado
