Hey everyone, my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play So Easy to Fall in Love by Olivia [music] Dean on the guitar. And today I am featuring my Journey Instruments OF660 guitar, which is one of the coolest guitars that I own because it is actually collapsible. [music] You can fold it in half and take it with you, which makes it an awesome travel guitar. Here's a quick overview of everything I'll be covering in this tutorial today. And with that being said, let's go ahead and get started. All right, guys. So, you're going to need to know eight different chord shapes to play through this song. [music] And we're start with our D minor 7, which looks like this, and sounds like this. And by [music] the way, if you don't know how to read these chord charts you're seeing on screen, I do cover how to do that my free beginner series right here on YouTube. So, make sure to check that out right here. The next chord shape is our E minor 7. >> [music] >> There's our F over C. We also have our C major 7. After that we have our C7. We also have our G7. >> [music] >> There's our A minor 7. And then last is our B7. And two notes about these chord shapes is if you wanted to keep this completely bar chord-free, D minor 7 technically is a bar chord because we're barring those bottom two strings. So if you wanted to play zero bar chords to play through this song, you could replace your D minor 7 with your D minor. [music] Okay? And then also that B7 chord, you might have seen it freted like this before. And this is B7 as well, but what we want to do is we want to take our middle finger and move it up one string to cover that bass note. And that'll give it more of a [music] full sound. Um, but if you wanted to, you could also just play your regular [music] B7 instead. Uh, but those are the eight chords you need to know to play through the song. So, go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really look over these chord shapes, get them memorized, and also practice transitioning back and forth [music] between them, cuz it'll make learning the rest of the song so much easier for you. But once you have these chords under your belt, we can go ahead and talk about the strumming that I would suggest for this song. So, as I always say, if you are brand new to playing guitar or you're somebody who struggles with playing guitar and singing at the same time, the first thing I would suggest doing is to bring up the song and go ahead and go through the entire thing with just a single downstrum on each chord change as you sing through the song. And you want to take this time to really get used to what word or what syllable you're on whenever those chords are changing. So, here's a quick example of what that would look like. I could be the [music and singing] twist, the one to make you stop, the icing on your cake, the cherry on the top. All right, [music] so that's just a really quick example, but you would essentially want to do this for the entire song and just really make sure you know where those chords are going to be changing. So, I'll make sure to leave that link in the description box if you're interested. But once you've done this and you're comfortable with where those chords are going to be changing, then we can go ahead and add to this to create more of a full strumming pattern you can use for this song. All right, guys. So, for strumming today, I have two different patterns I wanted to show you. And we are going to start with the one that's just a little bit more complicated just because it's the main one that you kind of hear throughout the song. As you can see at the top of the screen here, we're going to be in an eighth note count. And we're just going back and forth between our down and our upstrums. So, it sounds like this. We've got 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and [music] 3 and 4 and down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up. All right. And what we're going to do is play through this pattern either once or twice for each chord throughout the song. So, let's go ahead and start here on the first verse. We've got our F over C chord on. All you want to do is play through this entire measure. So, we've got down, up, down, up, down, [singing and music] up, down, up twice for F. >> [music] >> All right. Then you go to your C major 7 once. Down, up, down, [singing and music] up, down, up, down, up to C7. Down, up, [music and singing] down, up, down, up, down, up. All right. So, the actual strumming pattern is fairly simple. We're just strumming every eighth note beat on a down or an upstrum. But something that you can do to immediately make this sound a little bit closer to the kind of bosanova sound that the original song has is I'm going to add a few X's on some of these beats. So, as you can see on beats two and four, I've added these X's and that just represents that we're going to kind of chuck our strings. So, basically what that is is instead of playing through the chord like normal on beats two and four, I'm going to kind of deaden the strings as I strum. So, you don't want to hear any notes on that. You just want to kind of hear like kind of scratchy strings. And the way that I'm doing that is on those beats on the hand that has my pick in it. I'm taking the side of my palm here and similar to a palm mute, I'm kind of following it through and like kind of taking the side of my hand and scratching through the strings on those downstrums. It should kind of like mute the strings but also produce this kind of percussive sound. All right. So, what you want to do is strategically add that to the second and fourth beat. So, we have one and two and three and four [music] and. Okay. So, if you can add these chucks in, you'll see immediately how it sounds a lot closer to the original song. >> [music] >> All right. So again, the checks are totally optional, but if you can add them in, I would definitely suggest doing it because it'll make the whole song sound a little bit more upbeat like the original. So with that strumming pattern into the first verse, it would sound like this, a little bit faster at tempo. We've got F over C. Two measures to C major [singing] 7 to C7. All right. Chucks on two and four. And that's how you play the verse. I could be the twist, the one to make [music and singing] you stop, the icing on your cake, the cherry on the top. There's heaven in my [music and singing] heart. And we could find you a space. All right. So, it does take a little bit of practice to get this strumming pattern at tempo while also applying those chucked rhythms on the right beats. It's important you want to do it on two and four because that's what's going to give it kind of that bosanova feel. Um, so just make sure to pause and practice that as much as you need. The places I would use this strumming pattern is through all of the verses. When we get to the chorus, I actually like to use a second strumming pattern. So, let's go ahead and talk about strumming pattern two. All right, guys. So, for strumming pattern two, it might look a little bit easier than the first strumming pattern. Uh, we're still in an eighth note count, and it's going to sound like this. We've got 1 and 2 and 3 and four and 1 and 2 and 3 and four and. That's the whole strumming pattern. We've got our down on one, our up on the end of two, and then we're muting our strings on three. So, when you see this X here on beat three, that just means we're going to take our right hand, stop the strings from ringing because we're going to mute them. So looking at our chords, we're starting here on our D minor 7 chord. What you want to do is play through the first beat, go up on the end of the second, [music] and then mute on beat three. So we've got 1 and [music] 2 and 3 and 4 and. Okay? And you're doing that for each measure. So next is G7. 1 and [music] 2 and 3 and 4 and. We've got a minor 7. Same thing. 1 and 2 [music] and 3 and 4 and to C7. 1 and two [singing] and three and four and and that's basically the whole strumming pattern for the chorus. I make it so easy [singing and music] to fall in love. So come give [singing] me a call and [music] we'll fall into us. I'm the perfect [singing] mix of here at the second part of the chorus. Something that I like to do to kind of fill it in a little bit more is I will add an extra down and up strum on the last beat. Four and. Okay. So now we've got 1 and 2 and 3 and four and down up mute. Down up. All right. So on our D minor 7 chord, we've got 1 and [music] 2 and 3 and four and into your G7. 1 and 2 [music and singing] and 3 and 4 and to a minor 7 [music] to B7. So again, I like to just add that fourth beat in the second half of the chorus. So starting in the second half of the course, it would sound like this. I'm the perfect mix of Saturday night and the rest of your life. >> [music and singing] >> one with the heart would agree. It's so [music] easy. Right there you can see the D minor 7 and the E minor 7 have a little starred asterisk. And basically what that means is that's my way of telling you that I would suggest doing just a single downstrum on each of these chords. [music] It's so easy to fall in love [singing] with. All right. And that goes back into the verses which goes back into that first strumming pattern. And so let's go ahead and play through the entire chorus so you can hear how it all comes together more at full tempo. Cuz I make it so easy to [singing] fall in love. [music] So come give me a [singing] call and we'll fall into us. [music] I'm [singing] the perfect mix of Saturday night and the rest of your life. [music] Anyone with the heart would agree. It's so [singing and music] easy to fall in love with. All right, so that goes back into the verse. And then for the verse, we would do that full strumming pattern with the chucking that we talked about earlier. And so between these two strumming patterns, you could play through the entire song and I [music] think it sounds really great. So go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really look over these strumming rhythms until you can kind of get them under muscle memory. If you want to sing on top of playing guitar on this song, you do have to kind of develop that muscle memory so that you can play through these strumming rhythms without counting the rhythm in your head anymore. And that's when it'll be easier to sing on top of. So again, this will take just a little bit of practice. So make sure to pause and practice for as long as you need to. Um, there is one thing I wanted to show you guys, which is a fingerpicking pattern. If you do the finger picking, it does sound the most like the original song and it has that super bosanova kind of feel. So let's go ahead and talk about fingerpicking next. All right, guys. So, for finger picking for this song, it's pretty simple, but let's go ahead and go over a few rules first. of all, I am going to number my guitar strings. So, you can see here the low E is six, and it goes 5 4 3 2 1 all the way to the thinnest high E, which is one. And so, for this section of the tutorial, I will be referring to my strings as numbers. And then, let's talk about our hands. Our left hand is nothing's going to change. You're still going to be keeping your same chord shapes down that we've been playing throughout this song. But your right hand, what we're gonna do is drop the pick and instead of strumming our strings, we're going to take our fingers and pick individual strings to play through this picking pattern. So, let's go ahead and assign some fingers to some strings on our right hand. I want you to take your pointer, your middle, and your ring finger. And those are going to go on some of these middle strings, the D, the G, and the B. So, the fourth, the third, and the second string. Okay? And so throughout this picking pattern, these three fingers are never going to move from these three strings here, the only finger that's going to move is your thumb because your thumb is either going to be on the sixth string or the fifth string depending on what chord we're playing. Okay? So looking at that first verse, we're starting on our F over C chord. You want your thumb to be on this fifth A string, okay? Because that's our lowest note in this chord. And what you're going to do is you're going to pick your bass string by itself. So your thumb by itself. Then you're going to pick the other three fingers together at the same time. [music] That's what the parenthesis is. So we're going to go 1 2 3 [music] 4. Okay. So, and what I'm doing is in between picking those three strings, I'll kind of like take the side of my palm and kind of mute the strings in between. And that'll give it a little nice rest to give it more of that bosanova feel. [music] I'm also kind of tapping on the strings. If you can hear that kind of percussive element, I think that sounds great. So, um, that's how I like to pick through this song. We've got 1 and [music] 2 and 3 and four and twice to C major 7. Same thing. You're going to be picking the same with your right hand. five and 432. [music] All right. C7 is same thing. Your thumb's not changing strings. [music] All right. So, we've got [music] two measures. F over C, C major 7, C7. [music] All right. And if you wanted to, you could pick through the verses just like that. I [music] could be the twist, the one to make you stop, [singing] the icing on your cake, the cherry on the top. There's heaven in my [singing] heart and we could find you some [music] space. All right. [music] And then if you wanted to take that into the chorus, you could do it in the chorus as well. The only difference is with the chorus, we are going to be playing that D minor 7 chord. So in this one instance, you would want to take your three fingers and move them to the bottom three strings, 3, 2, and 1. And your thumb would be here on the fourth D string. All right? But this is the only chord that's going to be different. [music] When you get to your G7, it goes back to the middle strings for your three fingers. All right? So just remember that your pointer, middle, and ring are on four, three, and two throughout the whole thing. The only chord that's different is D minor 7 where all your uh fingers are going to shift down a string. Okay? But the rest would be the same. Make it so easy to fall [singing] in love. So come and fall [singing] into us. All right. Sorry, this song is pretty hard for me to sing. It's very high there. But basically, if you wanted to extend the fingerpicking pattern throughout the song, you could do it in the chorus as well. My suggestion would be to fingerpick the verses and then switch into strumming for the choruses. Or you could do strumming throughout the entire song. Um, but yeah, that is a really simple way to finger pick through this song as well. All right, guys. So, one last time, go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really look over this fingerpicking pattern. Um, like I said, I think it sounds really great if you want to use it in the verses. It's really reminiscent of the original song. However, if you don't want to fingerpick this whole entire section is optional. You can totally strum through the whole song like I will be doing here at [music] the end. But yeah, once you're comfortable with everything we've learned in this tutorial today, we can go ahead and put all of that together to play through the song. I could be the twist, the one to make [singing] you stop. The icing on your cake, the cherry [music] on the top. There's heaven in my heart and we could find you some space.
