hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play Somewhere Only We Know by keen on the guitar huge shout out and thank you goes to Lava music for sponsoring today's video I will be featuring their brand new lava me play all-in-one guitar in this tutorial today so make sure to stay tuned for a little bit more about that later um but here's an overview of everything that I'll be going over in this tutorial today and with that being said let's go ahead and get started all right guys so we have nine chords to play through the song today and we're going to start with our G major which looks like this and sounds like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord charts you're seeing on screen I Do cover how to do that my free beginner course right here on YouTube so make sure to check that out the next chord is our G major 7 and so if you want to learn this with the regular fingering you would do it like this this is kind of more of the conventional fingering for this cord however I always advocate for you guys to play guitar however is most comfortable for you so I actually like to play my G major 7 by sliding my ring finger down I have a little bit smaller hand so I feel like this is more comfortable for me but feel free to do the conventional fingering that's on screen if that's more comfortable for you but either way it sounds like this all right um the next chord shape is our a minor we also have our D suspended four you can remove your pinky and that is our D chord there's also our E minor chord then we have our bar shape which is our B minor then there's our C major and then the last chord is our a minor 7 and those are the nine chord shapes to play through this song so go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really memorize these chord shapes as well as practice transitioning back and forth between them because it will make learning the rest of the song so much easier and in case you have a keen ear and you've already picked up on it I do actually have some effects turned on my lava me play guitar one of the features I think is super fun to play around with is their effects app where you can choose from all sorts of presets that can add delay Reverb modulation and more to your performance each preset is displayed with a really cute animation and you can even apply multiple presets layered on top of each other at the same time by creating your own templates and all of this is built straight into the guitar no extra pedals or gear required to get the perfect sound your you're looking for so don't forget to check out the link in my description below for more info and if you are someone who's currently struggling with transitioning your cord shapes fast enough I would suggest checking out my practice with me Series where we go through the skill in real time together um but once you've done that we can go ahead and talk about the strumming for this song all right guys so as always the first thing I would recommend if you are someone who's new to playing guitar or you struggle with singing and playing at the same time is to bring up the song and play through the entire song with a single down strum per chord change as you sing through the song and this is really going to give you a chance to get used to where those chord transitions are going to take place so here's a quick example of what that would look like with the first verse I walked across an empty land I knew the pathway like the back of my hand all right and you would basically want to do that entire song with just a single down strum until you really know where those core transitions are going to happen and this actually something you can do right now if you check out my patreon page I do have this entire guide available to download and print out so I will make sure to leave that link in the description box for you guys um but once you've done that we can talk a little bit more about a full strumming pattern that you can use for this song all right guys so the first strumming pattern I would recommend as you can see is mostly just down strums with an upstrom at the end so let's go ahead and zoom in and talk a little bit more about this Rhythm all right guys so we are technically in a 16th note rhythm today however I do think it's easier to count it as if it were an eighth note Rhythm so basically that sounds like this we have 1 and two and three and four and 1 and two and three and four and a one and two and three and four and a down down down down up down down down down down up all right so basically all down strums we just have that one little up strum pickup at the end there but really quick before we move on I'm going to underline some of these down strums and basically what that means is we're going to Accent those beads so as you're strumming com down you want to kind of give these underline beats a little bit extra kind of like oomph to them so that they sound a little bit more you know loud and Punchy than the other down strums so if you add that accent it'll sound more like this one and two and three and four and a one and two and three and four and a all right totally optional to add those Accents in but I think if you can do it it does Drive the song forward quite a bit and then the last thing about this strumming pattern is I'm also going to add a vertical line after the third down strum and that's just going to represent where occasionally we want to switch chords within the strumming pattern so basically throughout the song you do want to play this entire strumming pattern one time through for each chord but you'll see as we go through the play through the D supended to De chord throughout the verses and the bridges is going to be split so let's go ahead and just kind of go over that so we can see what that looks like so you can see here in verse one we're starting with our G chord and we just have a down down down down down down up to G major 7 to a minor and then right here is an example of what I was talking about with that split pattern we're going from our D suspended to our D chord so on D suspended you want to do the first three down strums down down down then take off your pinky to your regular D chord and finish it out down down down down all right so throughout this song the only place that you're going to do this split pattern is between your D suspended and your D chord so without stopping it goes like this we have G G major 7 a minor D suspended to D you got it I walk across and then feeling I knew the pathway like the back of my head I felt the Earth beneath my feet that by the river and it made me all right so basically that first verse that's how you would play all the verses throughout this song um the bridge is going to be basically like the verse as well we're going to use the same strumming pattern and again we're going to have that split pattern from the D suspended to the D so the bridge would sound like this we've got E minor B minor c d supended d you got it a simple thing where have you gone I'm getting old and I need something to R rely on so tell me when you're going to let me in I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin all right so basically that's the first strumming pattern you can use it for almost the entire song I would use it for the intro the verses and the bridges um but for the choruses there is a little bit of a difference in the Rhythm that I wanted to show you so let's go ahead and talk a little bit more about strumming pattern too all right guys so our second strumming pattern is going to look a lot like our first one as you can see it's down down up down down down down up so let's go ahead and zoom in and talk a little bit more about this Rhythm all right guys so again we're in a 16th note Rhythm but I'm going to kind of count it more like an eighth note Rhythm just cuz it's easier that way um but basically for this one it's really similar to what we just played but we're having a little bit more of a pickup in the middle there so we have 1 and two and three and four and 1 and 2 and a three and four and a down down down down up down down down up all right so it's very similar to the first strumming pattern um what I wanted to point out that's a little bit different about this one is we are going to Accent different beats so I'm underlining the first and the third beat here and basically those are the ones we want to Accent this time so we have one and 2 and a three and four and a okay and then the split pattern is actually going to go right here right in the middle so the best way to kind of understand this is to look at the choruses all right so we can see here we're starting with our a minor 7 and for this chord you're actually going to stick with the first strumming pattern so we have 1 and 2 and three and four Anda then from your B minor to your D this is where we're going to use the Split Second struming pattern okay so we have B minor down down down down up and that'll lead into the D down down down up all right so a minor 7 gets the full measure and B minor and D get a half measure so Al together it sounds like this we have a minor 7 down down down down down a B minor D so you can kind of hear how the B minor and D don't get play sted as long as that a minor 7 so Al together without stopping and with some singing in there it sounds like this if you have a minute why don't we go talk about it Somewhere Only We Know This Could Be the end of everything so why don't we go Somewhere Only We Know all right so you can kind of see in the CH there we're going back and forth between strumming pattern one with the full measure and strumming pattern two with the split measure um but basically those are the strumming patterns that you can use to play through the entire song so again go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really get these strumming patterns under your belt and try your best to kind of internalize them because the more you can play them without counting the Rhythm in your head the easier it'll be to sing on top of it and before we jump into the play along I wanted to take a second to talk to you guys about my favorite feature of the lava me play that I've personally been enjoying the most if you've ever seen my beginner series you'll know how important I think it is to practice with a metronome to develop good Rhythm and strumming habits but something else that works just as well but can be a little bit more fun is playing to a drum track and with laam me plays live drums app you can actually choose all sorts of music genres and jam with a beat each track is again built into the guitar using the h I lava system and the coolest part is you can actually set what tempo you want to play and the drum track will adjust to match so I've seriously had the most fun learning new songs
