hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play is stuck with you by ariana grande and Justin Bieber on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you want to learn so to play this song I have my guitar in standard tuning with my capo on the first fret and that's what we can play it in the same key as Justin and Ariana if you do not have a cable you can follow this tutorial through exactly the way it is without a capo it'll just be a half step lower in addition to that we are going to need to know seven chords now five of them are required whereas two of them are kind of optional in a way and I'll explain all of that when we get into the chords section but this tutorial is gonna be geared a little bit more towards people with some guitar experience because there are gonna be two Barre chords but in addition to that we've also got two strumming patterns and one picking pattern that I want to show you to play through this song so with that being said let's go ahead and jump into an overview of what I'll be showing you in this tutorial go ahead and job insane baby run so like I said at the beginning you are gonna need to know seven chords if you want to play the song exactly how Justin and Ariana do however two of them you can kind of get away with not knowing because they only play it once in the song so those chords are gonna be G B minor C a minor and D so those are the five that are definitely required you have to know and then the two that you can kind of get away with not knowing would be B 7 and C minor so if you already know all seven of these chords and you're familiar with them then that's perfect and great however if you do want me to break them down for you and show you how to play those and things like that then go ahead and skip to this time here where I will show you how to play each of those chords and then after that we're gonna jump into some strumming patterns that you can use for this song I'm going to start out with a practice pattern because I always suggest if you're new to guitar that this is a really great way to get yourself more familiar with a song that's just gonna be one simple down strum on the B for every chord change now this is really simple if this is something that you think you can skip and you don't need to practice it and that's perfect however if you do want to get an example of how that goes and what it sounds like then go ahead and skip to this time here where I will take you through an example of how to practice with that practice pattern after that we're gonna jump into our first strumming pattern and as you can see it's just down down up down up and it's gonna sound a little something like this now this strumming pattern is gonna be one that you can use throughout the whole song however in my cover I usually like to go with picking so I only use this strumming pattern kind of at the end and things like that so if you want to learn the picking pattern you don't have to know the strumming pattern and vice versa if you want to play it with strumming you don't have to learn the picking okay so if you feel like you already understand the rhythm of that strumming pattern then that's great however if you want me to break it down for you a little bit more and take you through some examples of how it would sound in the song then make sure to skip to this time right here where I will break down strumming pattern one for you and take you through it more slowly with some examples after that we're gonna go to our second strumming pattern which as you can see is just four down strums and then followed by a mute and it's gonna sound a little something like this I like to use this strumming pattern during the bridge so if you kind of already understand it and you can hear the rhythm of it and that's perfect however again if you want me to break it down for you a little bit more and show you how it would sound in the song and things like that make sure to skip to this time right here and I will break it down for you and give you examples of where I would play it in the song and then after the strumming patterns were gonna jump into a picking pattern that I would recommend using for this song and the picking pattern is gonna sound a little something like this so if you like the way that picking pattern sounds as well then make sure to skip to this time here where I will explain and break it down for you on how to play it and what fingers go where and things like that however if you already got it by just watching me and like listening to it and you want to just go through and play the song make sure to skip to the playthrough here at the end and that's where I will have the chords and lyrics and everything on screen in front of you and we'll play through the song together but if you do want to look at things a little bit more closely then let's go ahead and jump into the more in-depth part of this tutorial and we'll start with the chords this time alright so now let's take a closer look at those chords like I said there are going to be seven in this song and five of them are absolutely required so let's go ahead and start with those the first is G which looks like this and sounds like this after that we've got our B minor chord and this is a barre chord and it looks like this and sounds like this after that we've got C which looks like this and sounds like this next we have E minor which looks like this and sounds like this and the last required cord you need to know is D which looks like this and sounds like this now let's take a closer look at those two kind of optional chords first we have b7 which looks like this and sounds like this and then the other chord we have is our C minor chord which looks like this and sounds like this now I know Barre chords like this can be hard for a lot of you guys so like I said they're kind of optional you're only going to be playing that b7 and that's C minor chord once through the whole song so if you really don't want to learn how to play those you can replace your b7 chord with your B minor and your C minor chord with your Imai 'nor but those are all the chords you need to know for this song alright so once you have those chords memorized go ahead and take some time to practice transitioning between them you do want to be able to transition between them pretty smoothly if you want to learn that picking pattern so go ahead and just make sure that you can transition between the chords if this is something that you're having trouble with I have a TM T on how to transition between chords faster where I take you through some tips and tricks and some drills and exercises that you can do to work on that so check that out if that's something that you're working on but with that being said let's go ahead and jump into the strumming patterns that I like to use for this song cuddle this time but as well cancel our place I could stay here forever beloved alright so those of you familiar with any of my other tutorials know that I always always start out with a practice pattern which is just one simple down strum on the beat for every chord change if you are new to guitar in any way or you are unfamiliar with a song this is the best way to kind of get used to it before you dive into harder strumming patterns and picking patterns and things like that so let's go ahead and go through an example of what this would sound like I've got my G chord on since that's the first chord in the song and again all you want to do is do one down strum for every chord change so we've got our G chord we're gonna strum down once then you would switch to your next chord which is B minor strum down once then we've got C strum down once then we've got a minor and D all right so you just want to kind of practice this and put it in rhythm go ahead and take the song through and seeing a few of the words that way you know where those chord transitions are going to be this is really really gonna be able to help you pick up some of the harder strumming patterns later down the line so let me go through an example of this and we'll do the pre-chorus so go ahead and put your G chord on and again all we're doing is strumming one down strum for every chord change oh god ah this time on our hands might as well cancel Loveland's I could stay here for a lifetime alright so basically you want to do that for the whole rest of the song and just make sure you know where those chord transitions are gonna be I will give you a little bit of a heads up this song is very repetitive so you're gonna be holding out your G B minor and C chords for the same length of time whereas your Imai 'nor and D chords are gonna go twice as fast this is gonna make a lot more sense when we jump into the other strumming pattern so let's go ahead and move on and jump into our first strumming pattern alright so as you can see our first strumming pattern is not too bad it's just down down up and what we're gonna do is play through this twice for every chord except for our E minor and D chords but we'll jump into that when we get a little bit closer to that part of this tutorial for now let's go ahead and start with just doing the motion so go ahead and put your G chord on since that's the first chord in the song and I just want you to practice the motions of it so we've got down followed by another down strum then stay down here and go up down up alright so those are the motions down up down so this will make a lot more sense when we put it in rhythm so let me go ahead and show it to you first 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & down down up down up alright so hopefully you heard the rhythm there why don't you go ahead and put your G chord on and do it with me so we make sure we get that rhythm down 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & down down up down up down down up down up down down up down up all right awesome so that is the entire pattern and once you have the rhythm down all you have to do now is add in those chord transitions so like I said at the beginning the way we're gonna use this strumming pattern is we're going to play it twice through for the G B minor and C chords but we're only gonna play it once through for the E minor and D chords so let's go ahead and practice that so you can kind of hear how the song goes we've got our G chord on we're gonna play the strumming pattern through twice down down up down up twice down up switch to your B minor and do it twice down down up down up twice down up then we got C same thing down up down up twice down up down up then here for the E minor we only want to do the strumming pattern once so you've got down down up down up then we switch to D and do it once down up down up all right so let's practice that one more time through without stopping again I've got my G chord on one-and two-and three-and four-and G down up down up twice speed minor twice C twice B minor ones and the ones you got G twice beat miner twice down down up down up a minor one deep Oh got all this time on our hands might as well cancel our plans I could stay here for a lifetime all right awesome so once you get that you basically would apply that for the entire song like I said the song is pretty repetitive so you can use that strumming pattern to play through the whole song just like we practiced together just now there is one spot that I like to change up the strumming pattern to make it sound a little bit more different that is during the bridge and that is when I like to use strumming pattern too so as you can see strumming pattern too is just four down strums followed by a mute okay so let's go ahead and go through the motions of this like I said I like to use this during the bridge so let's go ahead and start with our C chord this time and all you want to do is strum down four times one two three four and then slap your strings and mute them sometimes I do this with an open hand sometimes I do it with a fist sometimes I do it with the side of my hand it really doesn't matter as long as you are preventing the strings from ringing it'll give you that same sound okay so we've got one two three four mute all right so that's the whole strumming pattern and what you're gonna want to do for the bridge is play through this pattern twice for every chord change okay so let me go ahead and put the chord transitions up here on screen as you can see in the bridge we go from C to G back to C and then to D alright and you're gonna play this pattern through twice for each of those chords so now let's go ahead and practice this progression we've got our C chord on one two three four one two three four G twice back to C twice then to B oh baby come take all my time go make me lose my mind we not all that we need here all right so again I only like to use this drawing pattern during that bridge section if you wanted to stick with the previous drawing pattern you could totally do that too I just think it's kind of fun to make it the rhythm change a little bit in the guitar it gives it a little bit more interest but anyway those are these strumming patterns that you can use for this song like I said if you want to stick to just strumming you could just use those patterns and plays with the whole song however I personally really like to do picking patterns with songs like this so I did come up with a picking pattern that I think sounds pretty good with this song so let's go ahead and jump into the picking pattern that you can use you can't fight this no more alright so I've zoomed in a little bit so we can take a closer look at this picking pattern if you've seen any of my other tutorials I actually do like to refer to these strings as numbers so I'll do a close-up right here to show you guys what I mean so my low E is my sixth string and then I go all the way to my high E which is the first string and so I won't be referring to these strings as numbers for the rest of this picking pattern instruction but anyways what I want you to do to do is picking pattern is basically with your picking hand I want you to take your first second and third finger so your pointer middle and ring and I want you to put those on the top three strings your G B and E string three two and one alright so we've got all right so throughout this picking pattern these three fingers will always remain on these top three strings they're never gonna change okay the only thing you're gonna want to change is the string that you're playing with your thumb your thumb is going to cover the bass string so it's gonna be covering four five and six which are your EA and D strings okay and the string that your thumb is gonna play is dependent on what the chord is that you're playing so let's go over the chords with our G chord on you want to play the bass note which is going to be our sixth string but again remember these three fingers are going to stay on the top three strings so we've got four G six three two one all right and so how you're gonna play this picking pattern is you're just going to go from the bottom string to the top string back to the bottom so it's going to look like this we've got six three two one two three all right so that's the whole pattern again we've got six three two one two three all right so that's basically the pattern for the rest of the song so now let's go ahead and move on to all of the other chords so for your B minor chord the lowest string is now going to be your fifth a string so move your thumb from the sixth to the fifth string but these three fingers remember are still going to be on your top three strings and the pattern is still going to be the same so we've got five three two one two three all right so that's our B minor chord then we've got C and that's just gonna be 5 3 2 1 2 3 so it's the same as B minor 5 3 2 1 2 3 then for our E minor chord the lowest string is our low E string so we've got 6 3 2 1 2 3 a lot of people ask me this why do I hold my E minor chord down if I'm not even you know strumming those two strings that's just in case you accidentally pick a different string it'll stone still sound good but you can also just not have any fingers holding down any chords and it'll still be the same 6 3 2 1 2 3 all right so you can choose to hold it down or not it's up to you I personally just like to hold it down so we've got 6 3 2 1 2 3 4 a minor then for our D chord our bass note is now this fourth D string so now you're going to move your thumb from the 6 to the 4th string and it's the same pattern 4 3 2 1 2 3 all right so so far let's do the whole thing we've got our G chord six three two one two three we've got our B minor chord is five three two one two three C is the same five three two one two three a minor goes back down to six three two one two three and then D goes to four three two one two three all right so now let's go ahead and double up on our G B minor and C chords just like we did with strumming and we're gonna play this picking pattern through twice for those three chords alright so let's go ahead and put this together we've got G six three two one two three twice switch to B minor five three two one two three twice switch your C chord 5 3 2 1 2 3 twice then here for a minor and D you're just going to strum you're just gonna do this picking pattern once so we've got B minor 6 3 2 1 2 3 then D 4 3 2 1 2 3 so now let's go ahead and go through this again without stopping we've got our G chord on 6 3 2 1 2 3 twice B minor twice see twice a miner once and D once you got it lock the door thought the K can't fight this no more it's just you and me and there's nothing I'm not the night I can do stop is W stuck there all right perfect so basically you can take this strumming or this picking pattern and apply to the whole song and I think it sounds really great really quickly let me just go over those other two chords with you so we've got our b7 chord on so this is if you choose to play those two kind of optional chords for b7 it's going to be the same as with our B minor so we've got five three two one two three all right and then for our C minor it's gonna be like C we're just gonna go five three two one two three so the only place you're going to see that in the song is the very last time they do the chorus so that goes like this we've got G twice then they go to b7 twice then they go to see twice then they go to C minor twice okay so that's the only time in this song that you'll see those two courts lock the door broke the key can't fight there's no more just you and me there's nothing I would rather do talk with you stop it all right but just remember I said at the beginning if you don't want to play those kind of optional chords you can replace this with the chord progression we just practiced okay so instead of that b7 you can play a B minor and then instead of that C minor you can just play an E minor ok it'll change the sound a little bit but it will prevent you from having to learn those other two chords but anyway that's how you play this picking pattern and again you can apply this to the entire song stop it these Tommy stop all right so once you have those chords memorized you've practiced those strumming patterns you've nailed that picking pattern if that's something that you want to do let's go ahead and put all of these things that we learned together so that we can play through the whole song like I said at the beginning I will have the lyrics and chords and everything you need to know on screen in front of you for this playthrough so let's go ahead and put everything we learned together now this is stuck with you by ariana grande and
