hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play Thank You next by Ariana Grande on the guitar so stay tuned but this is something that you want to learn salsa so not only is this song super catchy and really fun to play but it's also super beginner friendly because there's only four chords for the whole song and they repeat themselves in the same order so it's very very easy to get the hang of it on top of that I like to just use one picking pattern and one strumming pattern throughout and I will teach you both in this video and then one last thing I want to tell you before we begin is that you will need a capo on your first fret if you want to sing this in the original key that ariana grande sings it in if you don't have a capo it's okay you can play through this whole tutorial with the same chords and strumming and everything that I'll show you it'll just be a half step lower so you'll just be singing a little bit lower than her version but with all that being said let's go ahead and jump into what those chords look like all right so let's go ahead and take a closer look at the chords you need to know like I said there's only four and we're gonna go ahead and start with our F chord which looks like this and sounds like this if bar chords are hard for you because you're a beginner or you know it's just an uncomfortable position you can always just take your first finger off and play the alternate version of F which looks like this and sounds like this the only thing you want to remember with this fingering is that you won't want to be playing the top or bottom strings so just be careful of that when you're strumming after that we need to know East 7 which looks like this and sounds like this the next chord you need to know is a minor which looks like this and sounds like this and then the last chord you need to know is c7 which looks like this and sounds like this and then again another alternate chord for this if that pinky is a little bit hard for you to keep down you can always just take it off and that'll be a regular C chord and that'll work fine in this song as well so we have our regular C which looks like this and sounds like this so if you want to play regular see you can use back throughout the entire tutorial instead of c7 and it'll sound just fine but those are the only four core genes to know for the song alright so once you have this chords memorized I would suggest taking a minute right here to kind of practice transitioning between them like I said earlier this song is pretty repetitive in the chord progressions it's the same four chords in the same order so if you take the time to learn how to transition between them right now the rest of the tutorial will be that much easier for you so the whole song is going to follow this progression it's just gonna go from F to e7 to a minor to c7 okay so go ahead and take a second and pause the video and just make sure that you can do those transitions and then once you have that under your belt we'll go ahead and jump into some strumming patterns that you can use with this song thank you okay so like I always suggest with beginners the first thing that you're going to want to do is go ahead and go through the whole song and just play one single Down strum on every single chord change and it'll be that'll just help you get more familiar with the song and where those chord changes are gonna be and what word you'll be singing and things like that so let me go ahead and go through an example of what that would sound like I have my F chord on because that's our first chord in the song and you're just going to strum it down once then move on your East seven the a minor the c7 but I did a fashion but it wasn't a match what's a song about Ricky now I listen in love even all got married and for peanut something fool wish I could say they get a mouth because he was an angel alright and pretty much you want to take back through the rest of the song and just do that one down strum just so that you can get familiar with the song how to get yourself in the mood to learn the rest of it but once you have that down let's go ahead and jump into our next strumming pattern so this song is pretty percussive in the way that it sounds so I like to use a strumming pattern that has that involves slapping our strings to kind of give it a little bit more rhythm so let me go ahead and show you the pattern first as you can see it's down up mute down up down down down up so let me go ahead and play it for you so you can hear it I have my F chord on because again that's the first chord in the song we're playing it down mute and how I'm doing that is I'm just taking my hand and slapping the strings to kind of stop them from ringing so we've got mute down down all right and so what you want to do is go ahead and practice getting this in rhythm so let me go ahead and play it one more time but this time I'll do it in rhythm down down so that's the whole pattern and what you're going to want to do is play this whole pattern through once for every chord change so let's go ahead and add in some of those transitions if you want to go ahead and put your F chord on and join me in this pattern we're gonna go a little bit slow at first we've got down down alright let's play that through one more time all right once you have that pattern down and you can kind of like feel the rhythm of it then go ahead and try to speed it up a little bit so down a mute down up down down down up down up down down up all right and then once you have it a little bit more quickly you can start adding in those chord transitions so let's go ahead and do our chord transitions so we're starting with F down down down up you'd switch to your next chord which is e seven play the same thing down down up down down down up then we have a minor same thing down down down up and then last we have our c7 chord same thing down down down all right and that's the whole thing you can play that through the entire song so once you have the chord transitions in go ahead and speed it up and try to connect it together so that all of the chords run together and you don't have to pause between them so I'm let me go ahead and show you what that sounds like we've got our F chord on down down up a minor down see a minor all right and then again once you have the pattern down and you've gotten those transitions kind of smoothly all you have to do now is speed it up to tempo and then you are good to go for the song so let's go ahead and try speeding it up so again we've got our F chord on we're gonna go a little faster minor about Ricky even on something I could say all right and I actually think that that's a great strumming pattern to use for the entire song so if you would like to then you can go ahead and jump to the cover portion of this video and just use that strumming pattern that we just went over to play through the whole song but I will also show you guys a picking pattern that I like to use that I also think sounds pretty good so let's go ahead and jump into that picking pattern no need for surgeon and for that I say thank you alright so I've gone ahead and zoomed in for this picking pattern again like I said the song is really repetitive so once you learn this pattern through once you can use it over and over again for the whole song and I think it sounds pretty good so let's go ahead and jump into it I'm starting with our F chord because that's our first chord in this song what I want you to do is go ahead and put your thumb on the bottom string which in F happens to be our low E string or sixth string again I like to number my strings instead of using the letter names so I'll go ahead and number it for you right here just so you know what I'm talking about but again I'm going to take my thumb and put it on my bottom east ring or my sixth string and then I want you to take these three fingers your pointer middle and ring and put them on the top three strings three two and one okay so when you have your chord shape down you should be able to pick all four strings and then how we're gonna do this picking pattern is you're just going to pick your thumb by itself first and then follow it up with the bottom three strings okay so we've got some three two one and then after you do that I want to take I want you to take your hand and just kind of do that same slap muting thing that we did with our strumming pattern so we've got slap okay and then after you slap you're just going to take those three fingers and pick the three top strings one more time so the whole thing is six three two one slap three two one and you can see my muting action is really fast and I'm actually keeping my hand in this like picking position I'm more just taking the palm of my hand here and in between the picks I kind of use that to mute the string so it's a really quick motion all right and that's how we're going to actually apply the picking pattern for the rest of the chords as well so we have our F chord the next chord you're going to go to is our e seven chord and this is going to be played the exact same way as f you're going to take your thumb pick the bottom east string or the sixth string there we go and then pick the top three strings so and then again it's just like our F chord with that rhythm so we've got with that mute in the middle all right so we've got fe7 let's go ahead and move on to our next chord which is our a minor this time you're going to move your thumb from the sixth bottom string to the fifth string the one right next to it okay but these three fingers will still be on the top three strings here so now we've got five three two one and you're just going to follow the same pattern we've got some top three mute top three one more time for a minor all right and again the last chord in this progression is just going to be our c7 chord and this is going to be played exactly the same as our a minor you're going to keep your thumb on the fifth string top three or other three fingers on the top three and it's the same thing we've got five three two one mute three two one all right and that's the whole picking pattern it's so simple let's go ahead and start up from the top with our F chord and do the whole thing again we've got f e7 a minor c7 and then because the song repeats itself you just do that over and over again so let's go ahead and do it without stopping we've got a g7 a minor C seven thought I'd end up with Shawn but it wasn't a Mitch wrote some songs about Nicki now I listened in them even almost got Barry and 15 I'm so thankful I can say Thank You Tamela the sea was an angel and that's the whole thinking pattern and you can actually use that through the entire song if you want or you can just kind of inter spice it between that and strumming or whatever you feel like for your cover alright so once you have those chords memorized and you can transition between them pretty smoothly without stopping and you've practiced that strumming and or that picking pattern that I showed you let's go ahead and join all of those elements together so we can play through the whole song as always I will be listing up in this corner what pattern I'm using for which part of the song as well as putting all of the lyrics and chord
