hey everyone my name is Ellen and today let's learn how to play The Only Exception by Paramore on the guitar here's a quick overview of everything I'll be teaching in this tutorial today and with that being said let's go ahead and get started alright guys so we have seven chords to play through this song and we're gonna start with our G chord which looks like this and sounds like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord chart you're seeing on screen make sure to check out my free beginner course right here the next chord is our D minor chord after that we have our C Major seven chord next is our a minor chord after that we have our D major chord then we have our c chord foreign the last chord you need to know is our F over c chord foreign ER I would recommend to pause the video and just take a few minutes to memorize these chord shapes as well as practice transitioning back and forth between them it will make learning the rest of the song so much easier for you and if you're someone who's struggling with core transitions right now I would recommend checking out my practice with me Series where we grow the skill together but with that being said let's go ahead and talk about strumming so the first thing I would recommend doing is to go ahead and sing through the whole song and play a single down strum for every chord change that's going to help you get used to where those chords are changing while you're singing so here's a quick example of what that would look like when I was younger I saw my daddy cry and curse at the wind all right so you'd basically want to do that for the entire song and just get used to what word you're singing whenever those chords are changing and it's actually something you can do right now if you're interested in printing out a guide with everything that I'm teaching in this tutorial today make sure to check out my patreon page all right guys so this first trimming pattern as you can see is not too difficult it's just down down up down up so let's go ahead and zoom in and talk about the Rhythm all right guys so we are going to be in three four time which means we have three beats per measure and on top of that we're also going to be counting this rhythm in a triplet Rhythm so it's going to sound like this one and a two and a three and a one and a two and a three and a one two a three a down down up down up down down up down times for your G chord and two times three to D minor and two times for your C Major seven more all right and this also carries into the chorus as well played exactly the same way exceptions all the exceptions all right and then like I said you can actually use the strumming pattern for the entire song but there are a few places where I would put in a second strumming pattern so let's go ahead and talk about strumming pattern two alright guys so the second strumming pattern is fairly straightforward as you can see I have six down strums and that's actually going to represent two measures and what I want you to do is just strum a down strum on every quarter note so we have one two three one two three down down down down and I would use this fairly sparingly throughout the song I just like to use it whenever I'm kind of building up a little bit more of that suspense so for example at the end of the second verse we're on our C Major seven chord I like to kind of build back into that chorus by doing the second strumming pattern where you're doing all down strums all on the quarter notes all right so essentially you're just taking out those up straps all right so you can see there when you do just the quarter note down strums it does kind of build up that suspense into the chorus and so I would use it there and I would also use it at the end of the bridge leave me with some kind of proof okay and then you just kind of go back into the chorus that last time around and that's where I would use strumming pattern too Alright guys so again make sure to pause the video and just take some time to memorize and internalize these strumming patterns strumming pattern one can really be used through the whole thing but I do like to sprinkle in stirring pattern too whenever I'm trying to build up some of that suspense leading into the choruses totally optional though so um go ahead and just take some time to internalize these and it'll make singing through the song while playing your guitar so much easier and once you've done that we can go ahead and play through the song one two three one ready go he broke his own heart Want to Have Fun
