hi everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran on the guitar so stay tuned if this is something that you want to learn taste so you might be thinking that because it's Ed shearan the guitar part is going to be a little bit harder to learn but it's actually quite simple because of the repetition in the song so um there are only five kind of six chords I'll explain what that means later and you want to have your guitar in standard tuning with your Capo on the second fret if you want to sing it in the same key as the original song of course if you don't have a capo you can take your Capo off and you can just play these exact same cords and strumming and picking and everything and it'll just be a little bit lower than Ed Sheeran's version on a side note I have this really amazing wooden Capo I got from my friend Leo I will leave links to all of his information in the description box below if you would like your own wooden engraved cable like mine it's beautiful and I've been loving playing with it so let's go ahead and start start off by jumping into those chords All right so let's go ahead and learn the chords that you're going to need to know for this song There are technically six but I like to think of it as five just because one of them is very close to the other one but I'll show you what I mean in a second let's start off with the c chord that's going to be our first chord in the song C looks like this and sounds like this our next chord is going to be F which looks like this and sounds like this after that you need to know G which looks like this and sounds like this okay next we have D Minor which looks like this and sounds like this then we have a minor which looks like this and sounds like this and then the last chord I wanted to show you is actually just like our c chord you're going to put down the exact same fingers in the exact same spots the only thing that's different is that this is going to be our c/e chord and so instead of muting the top six string we're going to actually play it that open E so it looks like this and it sounds like this so as you can see c and c/ e are very much the same you're just going to be playing this top open string in addition to the other ones for c/ E all right so once you have all those chords memorized and you can play between them and transition between them then we'll go ahead and start with some strumming patterns with myot In My Memory face so if you're subscribed to my channel I know you know the first strumming pattern already it's just one single downstroke and you're just going to play this one time on the down be for each chord transition just so that you know where those transitions are going to happen and what words you'll be singing at that time and things like that to prepare you for harder swimming patterns but let me go ahead and show you an example of what I mean we're going to go ahead and put our c chord down because that's the first chord in the song and you're just going to play each chord once as you come across it in the song when your legs don't work like they used to before and I can't sleep you off of your feet will your MTH remember the taste of my love will your eyes smile from your cheeks and you would essentially just want to do that for the rest of the song and just kind of get yourself used to where to expect those chord transitions but once you get that down we can go ahead and start into our first strumming pattern and here it is it's just down down down up so it's going to sound kind of like you're playing a downstroke on each beat except for on the fourth beat you're going to add in a little extra upstroke so go ahead and put your c chord on and I'll take you through this pattern we have down down down down up it's aligned with the beat so 1 2 3 4 and 1 2 3 4 and once you have the pattern down all you have to do is add in those chord transitions so at the beginning of the song we have our c chord which we're going to hold for the whole pattern down down down up then we switch to our F chord but instead of playing the whole pattern through for f we're only going to play half so F chord gets two downstrokes down down and then we switch to G and it gets the rest of the pattern down down up so it's a little confusing for the f and g chords we're going to split the pattern into two halves and give one half to F and one half to G but for the C chord we're going to play that through for the whole thing so let's give that a try we have c 2 3 4 and f g c f g when your legs don't work like they used to before and I can't sleep you off of your feet and of course you can use this for the verses the choruses and all the pre choruses as well people fall in love in mysterious waves maybe just the touch of a hand now one really quick and easy way to dress up this p pattern and give it more of that Rhythm you hear in the song is to add in a little bit of um kind of a tap to your strings in between the first and second downstroke so now instead of playing it straight we're going to tap the strings in between the first and second down and it's going to change the Rhythm a little bit so go ahead and listen to it once so that you get the Rhythm instead of down down down up it's going to sound like this now down tap down down up down tap down down down up so go ahead and try that with me you're going to put your c chord on and play it down and then when it's still ringing you want to mute those strings by tapping your fingers what I usually do is I kind of just curl my hand in like this and I just give it a little tap on the strings right above the sound hole so so we have down tap down down up down tap down down and then once you get the hang of that little tapping motion you just got to add in those chord transitions again we have c f g c f g when your legs don't work like they used to before and I can't sleep you off of your feet you remember the taste of my love will you to smile from your cheeks and of course like I said you can use this through the other parts of the song as well people wavs maybe just the touch of a hand me I fall in love with you every single day and I just want to tell you I am all right and then our next strumming pattern you can see still has the basic pattern that I just showed you but I'm going to add in a few more upstrokes just to fill in some of that empty space and give it even more Rhythm so this new pattern is going to sound like this down tap down up down down down up so you can see that it's pretty much the same as earlier but I added a couple more upstrokes so go ahead and practice that with me put your c chord on and we have down tap down up down down down up okay and once you get the hang of that again just add in those chord transitions c f g c f g when your legs don't work like they used to before and I can't sweep you off of your feet will you m still remember the taste of my love will your eyes still smile from your cheeks and then again the other parts of the song would sound like this people fall in love in mysterious ways maybe just the touch of a head me I fall in love with you every single day I just want to tell you I am now the very last strumming pattern I'm going to include because I do use it like twice during the song it's just super simple it's all downstrokes and the places that I use it is right before he goes into the chorus so let's practice what we had earlier I fall in love with you every single day I just W to tell you I so here on the word m that's where I use this strumming pattern 1 2 3 4 5 all downstrokes M so if you put that in with your singing it sounds like this I just want tell you I am so you can see how it kind of leads into the chorus and builds that like suspense up and it just sounds pretty cool I use it um twice in the song like I said so feel free to add that into your version if you would like to as well so of course strumming is all good and fun if that's all you can handle because you're a beginner stick with strumming and sing the song and have fun playing it but if you want to be a little bit more adventurous and you want to sound a little bit more like Ed Sheeran's original version we are going to learn picking pattern and this picking pattern that I want to show you guys is so simple once you get the hang of it so let's go ahead and learn picking I'll all right so now let's get into the picking pattern I figured out a way that's pretty simple to play for you guys and it still sounds a lot like Ed Sharon's original version so let's go ahead and learn how to do it so I'm going to go about this a little bit differently than my other tutorials just because once you learn how to to pick each chord then it'll be a lot easier to put those together and play the song so go ahead and put your c chord on since that's the first chord in the song and the strings we're going to pick for the C chord are the fifth string cuz that's the bottom Bas note and I'm going to play that with my thumb and then again using these three fingers I'm going to play the top three strings okay so if you put the fifth string together with the top three strings on your c chord and you pick it all at the same time it sounds like this okay and now it's really simple because for the rest of the chords it's going to be the same these three fingers are always going to play the top three strings the only thing that's going to change is whatever string you're playing with your thumb the Bas note so for C the base note is on the fifth string and that's what we're going to play with our thumb from there we're going to go to the c/ E chord and remember the only difference between c and c/ e is that this bottom E string is going to be played also so now for the c/ E chord instead of picking the fifth string with our thumb we're going to be picking the open bottom sixth E string okay the these top three fingers will still be the same so we have C with the fifth string and then we have c/ e with the sixth string okay so we have c c/ e c c/ e okay so let's go ahead and learn how to do the rest of the chords with our F chord it's going to be 6 3 2 1 cuz the sixth string is going to be our BAS note okay for the G chord again it's going to be the sixth string that's going to be our base note so it's 6 3 2 1 if you want to pick for the whole song then you'll need to know D Minor now in the D minor chord the fourth string is our base note so it's going to be 4 3 2 1 and then a minor is going to be 5 3 2 1 okay so let's just recap for C we have 53 2 1 for c/ E we have 6321 for f we have 63 2 1 for G we have 6 3 2 1 for D Minor we have 4 3 2 1 and then for a minor we have 5 32 1 and those are all the chords in the whole song and that's how you're going to be picking them so once you have memorized which strings to pick for each chord let's go ahead and put it in Rhythm so that we can have it sound like the beginning of the song so now I'm going to pick the C and then again I'm going to add that little bit of that tapping sound in between so C tap C tap and then after the tap we go into c/ e which is 6321 so C tap c/ e c c/ e okay so now what I'm going to do is I'm going to use that my fingertips to do that tapping sound between every single chord that I'm picking and now we just have to put in those chord transitions so we've got c c/ e f g c c/ e f g when your legs don't work like they used to before and I can't seep you off of your feet Taste Of Love Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks all right from here we just have to learn one more cool little thing which is that slide that you hear so with that we're going to add it after we play our G chord so we've got C tap c/ E Tap F tap G and then right here if you want to add this in instead of tapping the strings one more time we're going to do a slide and what I'm doing is I like to use my middle finger just because it's going to be easier for you to trans transtion back into the next C if you use your middle finger and what I'm doing is I'm taking my middle finger I'm sticking it on the G string or the third string okay on the first fret and then as I pick that string I'm going to slide my middle finger up one fret now notice I'm only picking it once with my right hand because when you pick it the string rings you'll have enough time to slide that finger up to get that sound okay so try that with me now all I have to do is add that into the rest of it so we've got C tap c/ E Tap f F tap G Slide okay and just in case you're wondering I like to use my pointer finger to pick that string just because we're used to using these three fingers on the top three strings so that's how I play that okay so let's try that again we've got C c/ E F G Slide when your legs don't work like they used to before and I can't sleep you off of your feet will your m still remember the taste of my love will your eyes still smile from your cheeks okay and the only other thing I wanted to go over with you with picking is going to be the end of the chorus maybe we found love right where we are so that's going to be a whole bunch of picking and we've got a minor 5321 G 63 2 1 f 6 3 2 1 c/ E 6 3 2 1 D Minor 43 2 1 G 6 3 2 1 and then C 53 2 1 and like I said earlier if you went ahead and memorized which strings to pluck every time you do a different chord this part should be pretty easy for you so we've got maybe we found love right where we are so this part might be a little tricky and might take a little bit of practice because you do have to pick a different chord for each word that he says there may We Found Love right where we are baby We Found Love right where we are a minor G F c/ E D minor G C again it's just going to take a little bit of practice but once you get that you can add that into your cover and it'll sound awesome all right so once you think you have all the chords memorized all the struming patterns down and you've mastered that picking pattern let's go ahead and put everything together and play through the whole song this is Thinking Out Loud by
