hey everyone my name is Ellen and today I'm going to be showing you guys how to play Time After Time by Cindy laer on the guitar huge shout out to my patrons for voting for this song as this month's bit more about that later and here's a quick overview of everything I'll be covering in this tutorial today and with that being said let's go ahead and get started all right guys so you only need to know six chords to play through this song and we're going to start with our F major which looks like this and sounds like this and by the way if you don't know how to read these chord chart your seeing on screen I Do cover how to do that in my free beginner course right here on YouTube so make sure to check that out the next chord is our G major we also have our E minor then there's our D Minor we also have our C major and then the last chord shape is our a minor and those are the only chords you need to know to play through this song so go ahead and pause the video and take as much time as you need to really memorize these chord shapes as well practice transitioning back and forth between them because it will make learning the rest of the song so much easier for you and in case you have a keen ear and you've already picked up on it I do actually have some effects turned on my lava me play guitar one of the features I think is super fun to play around with is their effects app where you can choose from all sorts of presets that can add delay Reverb modulation and more to your performance each preset is displayed with a really cute animation and you can even apply multiple presets layered on top of each other at the same time by creating your own templates and all of this is built straight into the guitar no extra pedals or gear required to get the perfect sound you're looking for so don't forget to check out the link in my description below for more info and if you're somebody who's currently struggling with board transitions make sure to check out my practice with me Series where we go through the skill in real time together but once you have that down we can talk a little bit more about the strumming for this song now something I always suggest starting off with especially if you are a beginner or somebody who struggles with singing and playing at the same time is to bring up the entire song and play through the entire song with a single down strum for every chord change as you sing through the lyrics and just take a mental note of What lyrics you're singing whenever those chords are changing and that'll make singing while playing a lot easier for you so here's a quick example of what that would look like if you're lost you can look and you will find me Time After Time if you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting time after time all right so you would basically want to do do that for the entire song and just make sure you know where those chord transitions are going to be happening and this actually something you do right now if you check out my patreon page I do have this entire guide available to download and print out so I'll make sure to leave that link in the description box for you guys but once you've done that we can talk a little bit more about a full strumming pattern for this song all right guys so my suggestion for a full strumming pattern as you can see is just a simple down down up up down up pattern so let's go ahead and zoom in and talk a little bit more about this Rhythm all right guys so we are going to be in an eighth note rhythm today so basically that's going to count like this we have 1 and 2 and three and four and 1 and 2 and three and four and down down up up down up all right and you basically want to take this pattern and play it one time through for each chord through most of the song um however there are going to be a few times where you're going to have to split this pattern between two chords so I'm going to go ahead and add a vertical line after the first two down strums and this is just going to represent where we want to change chords occasionally so a good example of this is going to be the verses so let's go ahead and pull up verse one as you can see we're going between D minor and C chords Through basically this entire verse um but instead of giving each of those chords a full pattern you would want to do a split pattern so on the left side for the first two down strums you would have D minor and then you would finish out the rest of the pattern with your C so for example we have down down on D minor up up down up on C so you can kind of hear when we do it without stopping how it comes together we have down down up down up down down up up down up back and forth between these two chords lying in my bed I hear the CL TI I think of you caught up in cires confusion is nothing new all right and this is going to go into the pre choruses as well are going to use this split pattern so here we have F to g t minor to F flashback four nights almost left behind all right and so you could see there on that last D Minor we were doing the full strumming pattern so just as a quick example let's go ahead and go through the chorus um you can see here most of these chords are going to have the full pattern but we are going to use the split pattern as well so we have G down up up down up to a minor down down up up down up here we do the split pattern f g to C you lost you can look and you will find me time after time if you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting time after time all right so if you are familiar with this song at all it should be pretty intuitive of where you need to do the split pattern and where you need to hold out a full um strum pattern but I will also label it at the end during the playthrough so you can clearly see which ones are split all right guys so again pause the video and take as much time you need to really get this strumming Rhythm under your belt you want to get it to a point where you're not really counting the Rhythm anymore and you're just kind of naturally strumming the correct Rhythm and this can take a little bit of practice so this perfect opportunity to talk a little bit more about the lava me play one of the apps that they have in there is the practice app so there's actually several preset strumming patterns built into this app you can set the metronome to whatever speed you're comfortable going and it's a really great way to kind of speed up your ability to play strumming patterns just like this one and I get asked all the time how to improve on singing while playing guitar and I promise the more naturally you're able to strum without counting the Rhythm in your head the easier it'll be to add singing on top of it so I definitely recommend using the hi lava system that's built into the lava me play to help you with the skill but anyways once you have your strumming under your belt then we can go ahead and put together everything we've learned to play through the song 1 2
